England captaincy / possible squad

I think Capello may pull a surprise with this one, I'm thinking it'll be Ferdinand or Rooney

A post from RedCafe, sums it up for me

Capello has in the past shown a preference for having a defender as a captain. Beckham may get it for his 100th and maybe last cap, but I expect Capello to revert back to a defender. So the only choice really is if Terry keeps it or Rio gets it. Cappello may want to shown that it's a new day in English football and therefore go with a new captain. but I would not be surprised if Terry keeps it.

Not wrong, Ferdinand's ban hindered his chances of getting the captaincy when Keane left, there's no doubt about it.

Yes it is wrong.

When Keane left he was vice captain as per the year book and it was stripped of it because of him meeting Peter Kenyon. He was snubbed on many occasions when either Giggs or Neville were substituted the armband went to VDS, Rooney or Scholes before Ferdinand.

I'm struggling to think of any England player that I'd consider to be a good role model without any history. But I think that John Terry is a terrible example of a National captain, he's a good leader for Chelsea, but some of the examples he sets and the way he thinks it is acceptable to behave, particularly towards the referee is very poor imo.

No real reason to change it imo. If he does decide to change then it has to be Gerrard.

Ferdinand is a cracking player but I just feel he's not captain material.

Terry has been the worst england captain in recent memory so no, he doesn't deserve to keep it, his behavior off the pitch and performances for england have been diabolical.
As for Gerrard, IF he makes it into the squad and IF he makes it off the bench will not be england captain as Ferdinand will be.

To be honest I don't think it really matters. There are no true leaders in the England team. You would have to say that even with an incompetent manager, a true leader would step up and get a team playing in a structured and coherent way, kind of like the way Zidane was basically running the French team during the WC. No one in the England team did that.

For all the talk of Gerrard and Lampard not being able to play together, did either of them speak to one another and say 'now look, this isn't working, heres what we'll do to fix it'? Nope, we just saw the same disfunctional midfield game after game. They aren't leaders, either of them. No one in the team stepped up to the plate as a real leader and stamped their authority on the team.

I'm hoping that Capello will give the players so much structure and direction in terms of instructions as to what to do on the field that a 'captain' becomes utterly irrelevant. I suspect in a team full of egos no one really respects the captain anyway. They probably all think they'd be the best captain.

I really hope Capello rules with an iron fist. Tell them word for word what to do. They're incapable of self direction as a team.

You can't even think of giving it Ferdinand with his history, TBH I would leave it as it is

One thing in Gerrard's favour though is that when he became Liverpool captain it moved his game on to another level

Agree with all of that. I said when Terry was initially named captain that although he deserved it i'd have given it to Gerrard as it would positively affect his game more than i thought i would Terry.

nah, you have to earn the right to be captain in my opinion. i don't agree with rewarding (relative) mediocrity with the captaincy in the hope that it will inspire you to start trying. tricky one with the captaincy, terry has hardly covered himself in glory but there;s no real stand out for me.

No you appoint the best man for the job. Gerrard and Terry are the only 2 natural captain and have proven there worth as captains of there club sides. They are also as good as certainty's in the side so it should only be between them.

but i've seen nothing from Gerrard in an england shirt to suggest he's the right man for the job. mind you i haven't seen much from terry either.

Neither of them perform to an acceptable level on the international stage though, so that discounts them from any notion of being international captain.
Gerrard in particular has been woefull.
