ATI Radeon 8.1

I have it as well. At least it doesnt stay on top of windows. My square is white and not yellow. At first i thought, lots of pixels must have got stuck..

Have tried several drivers now, and 7.12 got best performance. (just over 10k with). Tried 7.12 omega drivers and got 9.7k. Haven't 3dmarked the 8.1 drivers yet but they seem to have made no difference at all to crysis performance (which i really thought they might given how hyped the game is).

I've not got the CCC installed however so I don't have that much control over the settings unfortunately.

Hi everyone, please please could someone test image scaling in these drivers,
for example try 1280 x 800 on a 1680 x 1050 screen (Center Timing Mode in the CC).

This is the only thing stopping me getting a 3870 card.

Thanks

--------------

The scaling function no longer fails under certain resolutions in the Catalyst Control Center. Further details can be found in topic number 737-31169

anybody else got an annoying little yellow square in the top left of their screen. it's only on the desktop and other applications will cover it. it's something to do with the CCC as it goes away when you close the systray icon??

edit: i've just updated the drivers on my vista install and i get the same thing again. :p

SHAKES FIST AT MARC

Didnt notice that before... CANT TAKE MY EYES OFF IT NOW. WTF?

EDIT:

Only appears when other Windows are open.

If you click "Show Desktop" or "Windows+D" it goes away.

I don't recommend CCC, it's bulky and takes up entirely too many resources for what it is. I HIGHLY recommend ATI Tray Tools, but it doesn't work with Vista x64...Riva tuner i didn't like very much, and I'm now using ATITOOL which is ok, but no on-screen display when running 3d apps. all of those programs I mentioned are VERY Tweakable and there are great guides to using them on thier respective hompages and tweakguides.com...

ATi Tools is still beta (beta 3 is latest version) and is unstable. Also.. it doesn't have the Punkbuster protection that Rivatuner has... now that is a BIG bonus if you like playing COD4 whilst overclocked :) (No more constant crashing).

I liked ATi Tool for the simple reason you could edit the voltage on he x1950xt I had. You can't do this (at least at present) on the 38xx stuff, so it's pointless using it. Rivatuner doesn't suffer from the glitches with fan control that ati tool suffers from. I also noticed that it just scrambles the screen rather than a full on crash when the overclock fails which is a good thing :)

For the moment, Rivatuner is doing better. I will wait till another public release happens and retry att, but till then, I won't even be recommending it with 38xx stuff.

i have to give credit where credit is due. going from driver 7.7 to 8.1 for the x1950pro agp is very good indeed. iv notices a good boost in speed in test drive unlimited on the old athlon xp machine. bioshock runs better now too and crysis is still slow but no more dodgey artifacts popping up.
only complaint i have now against ati is the inability for thier cards to switch to 3d clock speeds when running windowed 3d apps. if they get that sorted then there is no stopping them. (does not effect the x1950pro since it has no 2d/3d clocks, just runs full speed all the time)

they fixed that with their new 3800 series of cards, i dont know about the 2900 because it was the worst card they have ever made but all previous cards cant do it, my x1900xt and my x1800xt couldnt do it, so if you want that fixed buy a 3800 series

are you 100% sure on that? my x1900xt can't go to 3d speeds in windowd apps either.

you deffo 100% sure that they fixed this issue in the 38 series cards?

yes when i run ati tool, it jumps from 2d speeds to 3d speeds, that is a windowed app, also ati tool isnt making the card switch because it cant even detect my card, the driver wont install properly so the clocks show as 0 and 0 within ati tool, i only use ati tool for stress testing along with a few other programs, because its useless on my system for anything else, and the 3800 series is the best cards ati have launched ever

buy a 3850 and with a n arctic accelero fitted, modded bios, a simple pencil mod, it can hit 1ghz core and over, it beats an overclocked 3870xt and comes very close to 2 * 3870xt's in crossfire, the 3850 pro is the best bang for buck card ever launched, i unfortunately found this out too late, i have a 3870xt
