The Witcher-Official Thread

Completed this over Christmas and ive got way more positive things to say about it then lets say... Crysis.

Such a great story and the ending was absolutely fantastic too. I normally agree with PC Gamer reviews but to give this 60-odd percent!? What a bunch of massive idiots!

I haven't bought PC Gamer since that review :p

Bought this a week ago and i think it's brilliant, enjoying it much more than elder scrolls oblivion and intro is the best i've seen for a while.

Latest issue has a letter about it. They defend them selves again. Personnaly I think they messed up. I'm one of these pop-gamers. I like almost every game that the gaming public likes. So as far as I'm concerned if I like it then they made a hash of a review. Its definitely worth an 80% or more not the 60's.

But even if one of their reviewers did mess up they will defend the decision. In the mag they reckon most of the team agree with Alec Meers review. Its one of these times I think when a reviewer totally despises some thing most other people would like.

But thats the thing when one person has a view its not going to be the view of the majority.

Oh and their demo disc this month for some reason has some pictures of it in thier gallery.

Their review editor (Tim edwards) posted this:
To address some of the points raised about the Witcher, and reviews in general.

No-one at PC Gamer thinks our readers look at our reviews in isolation - I don't really know where that idea has come from. I've noticed a few people, though, who seem to think that PC Gamer not agreeing with the Metacritic average means that they're out-of-step and/or downright wrong, and that they're furious with the magazine.

re: The Witcher review.
There were factual errors in the review, and I think we've corrected ourselves on them. I don't want Alec to be singled out over this: we have layers of editorial control, including myself and Ross, to catch these mistakes, and pull reviews. We messed up by not spotting it.

However, I'm not going to second-guess Alec's overall opinion: he genuinely doesn't like the game. That's what he wrote. For him to write a positive review, just to agree with our readers overall opinion, would be a betrayal of our most basic review policy: write what you think.

I'm aware that internet forums can be pretty heated, but I'm really surprised that people want PCG to essentially bow to crowds and agree with dominant opinions. I don't think that's the right way for any magazine to behave.

On the upside, we're trying to introduce things to the magazine that take us a little off our high-horse, to better give the correct impression that we're just gamers who write a magazine; rather than this high-faultin' media demon. It's not going to be immediate, but I'm hoping that the guys that stick with us will enjoy the changes.

Glad you're liking the new issue, though.
Over on Preys-World in response to the criticisms about the review. Nobody was saying bow to popular opinion. What I was trying to say is that it's not good for a mag to be out of step with its readership (they said not one of their team liked the game) and that they should better represent those who may have a different opinion. Reading PCG you'd think nobody had a problem with Oblivion or Bioshock etc.

Just completed the game, must say it was a joy throughout, i can't understand why it would get a score as low as 80% tbh.

This and Zelda on the DS were the best games in the last year for me.

All in all, the game must have lasted 100 hours, possibly more, thats about 5-6 xbox 360 games, all that for £10.

Bargain.

I'm still struggling to get into this. I've just left the 'prologue' bit and have been running around the tavern area. I just feel the combat is a bit too shallow and the voice acting leaves a little to be desired. The quests mostly seem to hinge around collection + delivery of items too.

I really want to like this game, its been ages since ive played a good RPG, but i'm struggling

You haven't really got into the main story yet; the quests therein are much more interesting. The collection quests are kinda derivative but they are mostly side quests, you don't really have to do them but they often lead to interesting side-plots and characters.

The voice acting is one of the common complaints levelled at The Witcher. I didn't think it was that bad but it was originally in Polish, so I guess for the English port the budget only went so far.

Stick with it, it's a great game.

The early previews actually had polish subtitles with english speach. But yes it does have ***** acting. But thats the charm especially when you chat a bird up and bed her.

i completed this on friday and ive been lost since, probably going to fire it back up again and take a different path. probably the best game ive played since morrowind - absolutely fantastic game.

all i'll say to anyone who is thinking of giving it up in the early part of the game (like i nearly did) is stick with it, once your underway in chapter 1 and 2 and you have to start accepting the decisions you've made it becomes an excellent game.

and as for the golem, use the pylons and keep him in the middle - real easy.

and did anyone else really hate the beast????

Jus ordered this for 15.99 :o

really lookin forward to playin it

wha would you say this is leanin more towards? Diablo2? Or Baulders gate series? or completely different?

whats this like now? Any patches etc? Vista 64 support? Had ti a while ago and it kept CTD'ing randomly (10mins of gameplay to 3 hours of gameplay, was annoying loosing a chunk of unsaved game, using vista 32)

So?

Well i've ogtten into it now. I had one CTD on vista 64 right at the start of the game, other than that its been fine. A patch has been released that not only fixes the majority of crash issues but also quarters load times making it a far more enjoyable experience.

Closer to Baldur's Gate with a hint of netherwinter, diablo and darker fantasy novels thrown into the mix for taste.

The patch made no difference to me. I still get CTD's every 5-10mins upon accessing ingame UI's, even on a new Vista x32 install. It's just pathetic. I've not bothered with it since Xmas and wish I could somehow get a refund on this pos but it was purchased online. Btw, Zero Punctuation has reviewed the game today folks.

Theirs a Yahtzee review on it.

He doesnt seem to like it but i think its one of the best mumemporgs yet lol.

Brilliant game, im taking time to complete it though only on chapter 4

Just watched it. He is funny and as always destroys a game whether its good or not.

On their forum theres a guy moaning that on his q6600 4gb ram 8800 ultra machine running vista 64 the game chugs along!? I have the specs below and mines as slippery as runny dodo's on a hot shovel.
