"War on Scientology"

There's no such things as official religions .. in this country at least.

It's officially recongnized as a religion rather than a cult or other such thing in the USA and im pretty sure in the UK as well i could be wrong tho

The Anonymous video is quite sinister. It's cool!
they use the windows computer voice thing that ruins it for me the back ground and music are kinda cool

i'd just like to clarify

this is basically a lot of 4chan users and associated nerds and wannabies as represented here

verses an overzealous and possibly corrupt but at the same time remarkably powerful organizations come religion which shall be represented by one of there many investments

i still think that this is the wrong way to go about confronting Scientology and even if i agreed with this course of action i would prefer if someone else was doing it

Scientology does not have half as many members as you seem to believe. Anon has more than you seem to believe. If anon were organised, they could bring down CoS easily, IMO.

Church claimed 3.5 million members in the United States alone if they actually have anywhere near than number thats quite a few and anon is a loose alliance of people who think there more important than they really are because they know how to crash a website

Apparently this is going to be discussed on Sky news tonight lol.

http://skynews.typepad.com/skydotcomnews/2008/01/join-martin-sta.html

It is a tale worthy of James Bond but this one is happening in real life.

A group of hackers calling themselves Anonymous have been threatening to destroy the Church of Scientology.

They claim to have taken down the Scientology website, they have posted threatening videos online and they are planning their next attack.

So what can anyone do about it? Regardless of your feelings about Scientology, should an unknown group be allowed to act this way?

Even one of Scientology's biggest critics - an online site called Operation Clambake - says this is the wrong move.

On tonight's show we will talk to a computer hacking expert about whether or not this threat is real and what can be done about it.

For all those don't know who 'anonymous' are, all the chan boards are coming together, 2chan 4chan 7chan 12chan 711chan etc several forums, and since a lot of stuff has been posted on digg and reddit, i guess people there are joining in too, to disrupt scientology's website phone lines etc ;p

Yeh yeh rules 1 and 2, who cares ;p

They won't get anywhere tbh. A bunch of college students who possibly have access to a small botnet. Vs a multinational "religion" with thousands of members and unlimited funds. I'm sure they can hire the best security experts on the planet to fight back.

this just isn't true at all, lots of big businesses get held to ransom via a ddos like online casinos etc. and there is no real way of stopping it because of the nature of a ddos, the traffic generated by a ddos looks like normal traffic connecting to a website, block that traffic and you effectively have to block everyone, and that's not what a business wants.

a bunch of college students you say? like you have any real insight to who is behind this .

ignorant and uneducated post tbh

It was recognised as a religion in America under some extremely dodgy/ questionable circumstances.

It is not recognised as a religion in the UK. It is classified as a business venture.

The US census of 2,001 only had 55,000 people list Scientology as their religion. This is vastly different to the 8 million members the CoS claims they have.

Not entirely accurate. It is recognised as a non-profit organisation in the UK and so is exempt from taxation. It failed to acheive charitable status.

I ask again. How many members do you need before you are considered a religion?

Yeah, the only difference being islam is centuries of years old and Scientology was invented half a decade ago by a failed science fiction writter who is quoted as having a fincancial interest in inventing a religion.

Woot! Lets commit ritual suicide.

Sorry but your logic is fundamentally flawed. If you accept Scientology as a religion, your a moron. At the very least, its a perversion of the term 'science' since it has no bases in science what so ever, just as christian scientists have nothing to do with science either.

So it is length of time that makes a religion valid then? That surely makes the comparative newcomers like Christianity and Islam mere babes in religion terms compared to Hinduism or Zoroastrianism and therefore as worthy of mockery as Scientology? If not then where do you draw the line and who made you the final arbiter of what constitutes a religion?

My original post was tongue in cheek but I don't think the logic is fundamentally flawed. Scientology as a name was more than likely taken from science fiction as the founders chosen genre and you don't find too many people confusing works of science fiction with actual scientific work so it is somewhat questionable how bad the 'perversion' is.

Quite a few of the neo-pagan relgions are less than 100 years old too, I guess they aren't real religions either?

but think back to when islam was created, it wasnt much different... people believed, many disbelieved. Same with christianity, look how much &%$£ that took until it finally got accepted by some parts of the world, and even then there were disbelievers who ther christians rode down and killed off? nasty stuff this religious nonsense.

plus other similarities with islam, a leader of disputable past creating a set of rules which to live by and then doing away with all previous pasts and traditions by stating that the rules should never be questioned, NOR changed i.e what has been always has been and always will be,

Who ******* cares if it is a religion or not.

I object to this organisation for very simple reasons:

1) They are extremely press shy and any attempt to investigate them independantly is met with, at the very least, intimidation and at the most Violence. This is on tape and is a fact.

2) They are at war with Psychiatry and Psychatirc medicine and want the practice to stop - this is insanity - no punn intended. My god I have a family member that suffers from Scitzophrenia and drugs have given her a life she would not have otherwise.

3) they are using their coinsiderable finances to manouvre themselves into positions of power and spread these disturbing messages- up until now only the Germans have had the balls to tell them to **** off.

Its frightening - what more reasondoes one need to be wary of them?

Do a search for "theunfunnytruth" on YTMND to see just how many lives that that particular idiotic doctrine has seriously screwed up. I must warn you though, the reason I haven't linked to it is that it's pretty disturbing.

I just watched it - I, of course, knew about he infamous McPherson case but not about the rest. It's truly frightening.
