In your opinion, what was the greatest console of all time?

N64 by a country mile

Apart from the very obvious Mario 64 and Goldeneye, N64 was affected by a gaming draught for all of its life - imagine the first year of PS3, that's what N64 suffered from. I don't get anyone who picks this console as the best ever, even Nintendo said they could have done a lot better with it.

Whilst i'll agree it didn't have as many games as other consoles, this never bothered me back then. Back then I used to really get addicted to games, whereas today i'll play it for a couple of weeks and thats that.

  • I had 1080 Snowboarding at launch, and even though I completed it pretty quickly, I CONSTANTLY came back to it for years since it was just so much fun to play.
  • Diddy Kong Racing, bought this with the console and I couldn't believe how good it was. Seriously, having worshipped MK on the SNES this was like heaven.
  • Mario 64 was addictive trying to get all the stars, again, this game kept me occupied for years.
  • Turok 2. What a game, shame my cheap memory card CONSTANTLY lost my save file. Didn't stop me constantly playing it though.
  • Ocarina of Time is the greatest game on any console, period.
  • Banjo Kazooie was a step up from Mario and I'd hate to think how many hours I put into it.
  • Mario Party... I never even had a second controller for my N64, yet I absolutely loved this game, it got to the point where I burnt a whole in my hand (combination of sweat + spinning the damn stick) and this kept me out of playing tennis for a fortnight :o
  • Majoras Mask. Not as good as Ocarina of Time, but still one of the best games I've ever played.
  • Donkey Kong 64 took collecting stuff to a whole new level and whilst this came out towards the end of the consoles life (for me at least), it was still a cracking game which I wasted many a night after school playing on.
  • Banjo Tooie. I purchased this a couple of years ago having missed out on it back in the day. Another classic

The thing is, each of the games mentioned got so much playtime it was ridiculous. These days a game will last me ten hours and thats it, back then I would have never considered selling a game since I'd always come back and have another play on it from time to time.

13 games lasted me approximately four years as far as I remember. I never got bored. The lack of games argument just doesn't cut it with me since each game provided so many hours.

I never even mentioned Goldeneye or Perfect Dark either :)

Purely because of how long it's held my interest I'd have to say the Xbox 360, having owned one (well 6) since release day. No other console I've ever owned has managed to keep me constantly interested.

Going backwards I've owned an Xbox 1, PS2, PS1, MegaDrive, Nintendo 64 and Snes. All of these I have sold within a year of ownership because they simply didn't have enough games I liked. The same goes for why I haven't owned a Dreamcast or yet bought a PS3, not enough decent games that I like.

This is obviously a personal opinion but I think it's a valid reason for saying its the best. I know they fail a lot but and even though I'm on my sixth I've never run into any problems with warranty so I don't take that into account.

SNES or the N64 probably when I factor in time I spent as a kid playing these consoles. I do play my 360 now and then but no way near the amount of time I spent on the SNES and N64.

I think the answer to the question is directly related to the average age of the people on this forum though as if I was 10 years younger I would probably be saying the ps2/360 etc as I doubt I would have even played any of the older generation consoles at its prime to fully enjoy the experience.

Yeh thats a good point. N64 came out when I was 11, had I been 11 when the 360 came out I'd probably have an entirely different opinion.

If the 360 was anywhere near industry standard reliable then it would be that. Instead for me it's the megadrive.

Plus I've always loved 2d platformers more than 3d so that was the peak for me.

Sega saturn comes a close 2nd for me, nothing since has had the quality of launch titles that had.

1/ Gameboy
2/ Can't decide between SNES or Megadrive
3/ PSX

However, I'm feeling kinda guilty for not mentioning the NES or the Master System in this list, because those 2 consoles alone really got me interested in gaming (along with the Spectrum 48K).

What I wouldnt give to be 6 again and go through all the magic of the SNES Mario games again. Or the Amiga magic. Going through Monkey Island. Playing Street Fighter 1 using just fireballs. Rick Dangerous! Rainbow Islands. Harlequin. With the exception of the Dreamcast, gaming went steadily downhill after the SNES - it became an arms race ever since then, instead of a truly imaginative pursuit for the developers. Look at all the Amiga and SNES and Mega Drive and Commodore games and all them. I have never seen such works of imagination and vibrant colors and settings. Grizzled space marines my ass.
