In your opinion, what was the greatest console of all time?

Amazed at all the people calling the Commodore Amiga a console! it was a fully functional home computer.

1 Commodore CD32 (32 Bit in those days ..oh yes!)
2 Sega Mega Drive (Brought the next generation of gameplay to the masses)
3 Sega Master System (cheap system good spec at the time plus a built in game!)

Question is can the Xbox360 do everything the PS3 can do ? And i didnt think the PS3 had been out 2 years yet, im sure it came out late nov 2006?
I can't think of anything it can't do in terms of features. They both do themes, but PS3's are far better, but I genuinely can't think of any features (aside from hardware [which I stated]) then yes, the Xbox360 can do everything the PS3 can.

dreamcast was rubbish

PS2 just because of how succesful its been and still is , and how many top class games
are available for it. id say ps1 but ps2 eclipses it in every way

snes is close second because it ruled my childhood

PS2 - I was one out of 40 people that got one on launch day in Luxembourg, mind you, that was how many consoles were actually available for the launch in the country!
Remembering playing Fifa 2001 on it and just going wow at the graphics!
Also, watching the first dvd :).

Second has to be the SNES, my first real console, good memories of Donkey Kong 2.

Thirdly, X360, has brought me back to console gaming really.

1. Playstation
2. Playstation 2
3. Playstation 3
4. Xbox 360

Playstation revolutionised the gaming world imo, at the time of release there was nothing quite like it, it had the wow factor! i have yet to be disappointed with any of the playstation conoles!

Burying your head in the sand? lol

It was Nintendo that revolutionised the (console) gaming world when it introduced much stricter quality of product policies and resuscitated the market after the crash in 83.

Sony then came along with their aggressive marketing practices (basically outright lies) showing the public pre-rendered cut-scene footage while shouting 'omg 3d!'. Their marketing line was essentially 'this is the latest greatest absolute best thing' and the general public not knowing any better lapped it up. The result, scores of sony fan boys who refuse to accept that every single time a re-release of the playstation series has been issued, they have been lied to; again and again and again.

Think...

Megadrive
Dreamcast
PS2

In no particular order.

I definitely spent the most time on the PS2 mostly due to Final Fantasy X and GTA: VC, both of which I racked up countless hours of playtime on.

The Dreamcast... Well it was ahead of its time, no question about that. They say it's in the same league as the N64 graphically, but then I show them a picture of Soul Calibur or DOA II and they soon eat their words. Some of the most quirky games I've ever played came out on that platform such as Jet Set Radio and Rez.

The Mega Drive? Well Sega do what Nintendon't. :p

N64 by miles for me. Spent half of my childhood years playing many of its amazing games and have never had so much fun playing games.

Followed clocely by the 360 though, excellent fun, just a bit more grown up.

You had a PSX? Sony's media center based on the Playstation 2? It wasn't even a console primarily. For someone so 'clued up' on Sony stuff, it's a rookie error :p, especially as you already named the Playstation 2.

LOL !! Well that clearly goes to show how much you know about PSX! Net Yaroze was orginally implemented for PS1 back in 1994! Due to capacity & cache limitations of the PS1, Sony tested IBM based PC systems with PSX architecture but it still didnt meet IBM process requirements. So they waited until the PSX/PS2 'emotion engine' (bascially waiting on 32-bit) was fully implemented before they had enough data requiements in order to program Playstation 1 games in 'full' 32-bit (which was a break-through at the time!) So Playstation 1 games werent fully implemented in to 32-bit until the PS1/2 hybrid (also known as PSX) was introduced!

And as I said. It's not primarily a console.
I know a lot more than you think.

Here's one for a start:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSX_(DVR)
Another:
http://www.ps3land.com/psx.php

Hell, take this quote:
Since it was designed to be a general-function audiovisual device, it was marketed by the main Sony Corporation (whereas Sony Computer Entertainment markets the corporation's specific game-related hardware).

I also pointed out the fact you named it as a console, which it wasn't. It was a media device. You could have named the Playstation, but like most people, made the common error of calling it the PSX.

Amazed at all the people calling the Commodore Amiga a console! it was a fully functional home computer.

I know that technically they are home computers but I always think of the C64, Speccy, Amiga and ST etc as more like consoles as they were, to a lot of people, used primarily for games. I know my C64 and Amiga were not used for anything but games.

For me:-

PlayStation
Xbox 360

PlayStation really did bring gaming to the masses and took it out of the bedroom and into the living room. I had an absolute blast on my PlayStation.

The 360, is so very nearly the perfect overall package. MS just need to sort out the reliability.

I also loved my Amiga 500 (with memory update that came with Dungeon Master!) & Amiga 1200, but don't class them as consoles. Sadly I missed out on the SNES & MegaDrive era as I was really into my Spectrum 48k and then Amiga! :D

1, Playstation - was such a huge step up from previous consoles that it really blew me away. I remember playing Wpieout for the first time and my stomach going over as I went over jumps. Gave the video games industry a much needed shake up imo too.

2, Commodore 64 - Such good gaming memories and soooo many great titles. I think I had over 700 games when I sold it :D

3, Atari 2600 - My introduction to my lifelong hoby and it still gives me a warm feeling inside to think about space invaders, pac man, frogger and sky-dive ;)

PC for the win - were it only allowed!

About time someone else said the the 2600! I found mine under my parents bed the night before christmas in 1980/81, i got space invaders, combat and outlaw with it. How bad was pac man though?

megadrive, ps1. they both completely changed the face of console gaming. ps3 would be 3rd for me, its just an amazing piece of equipment but as a console it hasnt made anywhere near the impact that the ps1 or megadrive did.

1. Dreamcast (incredible console. Great games and superb design)
2. Neo Geo AES (still gets regular play, despite being an 18 year old console)
3. Nintendo 64 (Goldeneye, Zelda:OOT, Mario 64, Perfect Dark)

Not sure if your just talking about the hardware or including the games as well. Hardware only then

Dreamcast - Had great graphics for it time which for its life time surpassed the over hyped playstation 2. First console to have designed from the scratch to be online. Also great controller and i liked the idea of the VMU although in practice the screen, power and battery life meant they couldn't be used for much.
SNES - Great graphics for its time, good controller and had RGB scart output. Also the system was well built and most are still going strong. Pity they did spend a bit more money on plastic the console it was made from as most have yellowed over time.

Worse designed console N64 - No RGB out put a controller that you need 3 hands to use all the buttons properly. The use of cartages when it was clear that CD's were the future. Also some poor designed/selected graphics hardware that resulted in most games looking worse on the technically more powerful than N64 than the Playstation 1.

If you include hardware and games into the mix then i would consider Dreamcast, SNES, N64 the best.
