In your opinion, what was the greatest console of all time?

N64 without a doubt. Nothing has ever come close to it for me since. First time i ever played Goldeneye with 4 friends can never be beat. 4 player gaming had never been seen properly and was totally amazing. Especially when you look back it now. Some of the best games of all time were on the N64. To be able to experience them when they were new was great.

Yeah was amazing at the time, unfortunately it hasn't aged that well :(

32" LCD with Goldeneye on an N64, through RF is painful to my eyes

As good as the PS3 is, the fact it's been named is absolutely ridiculous and hard to take seriously. The PS3 is a console which has been accused of having the weakest 12 month line-up of all time, a console which had to wait arguably 11 months before getting its first AAA title and a console which lacks many features most would count as necessary.

Possibly in 3 years time it might be the greatest console of all time and we know the potential is there, but after 12 months and what it's given us in terms of exclusives and pad 're-designs' it would be more accepted for people in peoples 3 worst.

I'm with this man, anyone who says the PS3 is the greatest console of all time is just... wrong. Yes I'm aware it's an opinion and all, but for the reasons that Nokkon has stated, it cannot possibly be one held with solid foundation and basis in reason. Seriously. If it was truly the greatest console of all time, people would be clamouring over each other for it, there would be a stream of AAA titles for it, there would be features comparable and on par with the other consoles, there would be no issues with the sixaxis, there would be consistent and steady content across all stores, there would be streamlined and clear SKUs, the list goes on and on and on and on and on. As it is, it's a third place flounder with still very few AAA titles, a ton of missing features that we take for granted such as ingame media bar operatability, and yet even more confusing SKUs in the pipeline. It's definitely NOT how a potential candidate for greatest console ever made should be done.

Trying to elevate the PS3 above something like the SNES, don't make me laugh !!

but can you not say the same thing about the 360 just different reasons? that others have said in their top 3, purely for noise and hardware unreliability - how can that be greatest console

My greatest consoles where selected buy how much I have/had played them and thinking about how many games I enjoyed on each machine I have owned. (Which is quite a few.)

I selected my 360 due to the fact that I play the thing nightly regardless of noise or the fact that it has broken twice.
My PS3 is in no way a bad console, I just don't play it as much, so that is why, in my opinion, the xbox is a greater console than the PS3.

Surely it depends on what criteria are involved in the selecting procedure and what each person considers a better quality feature than others.

No console has been without its faults but the PS3, again in my opinion, has been without a good selection of quality games.

I gave this allot of thought and i can't just name 3 consoles, I've had every console since the binatone to the PS3 I've even kept a few of them. Spectrums, C64's, Amiga's, Atari ST's, are NOT consoles they are fully fledged computers even though they were mostly used for games.

I also note that nobody's mentioned the Wii, or Handhelds which is interesting...

Here's my list...

Consoles

Atari 2600 - This was the first console i had that ignited that gaming spark, i spent a fortune on renting games and never regretted it. Fond memories

SNES - Games started to look like the ones in arcades, Had some great games and was a superior machine to the Megadrive in every way. It had that knack of when you thought it couldn't be pushed further something like DKC came out and then Starfox.

PS1 - The leap from 16 to 32bit was Huge and I've not seen a leap as obvious since. It also introduced 3D gaming and one of my favourite games of all time Wipeout. Also bought us proper fighting games in 3D.

Dreamcast - Wow! Never as a console had so many AAA games in such a short time, the games just kept coming. For a short time it was gaming heaven and anyone who says different obviously wasn't there ;) I have a vast collection owning just about every peripheral and game that ever came out. Absolutely love this console. It failed because Sega for whatever reason didn't tell the world about Dreamcast and only gaming geeks new what it was about. The games were also pirated to hell and back very easily with no cost or risk to the user and the general public were all waiting for the PS2.

XBOX - I know the PS2 was out before the Xbox and had more games but for me the XBOX is an amazing console from a Homebrew standpoint and the games it shared with the PS2 the XBOX games were better. XBMC still is amazing. I will never get rid of this console.

XBOX 360 - Lets be honest the console itself is a peice of junk, I have a PS3 and build wise it trounces the 360. But what other console as earned the right to be replaced time after time? It speaks volumes that people like myself are on there third console (RROD) and will not give up on it. The 360 as closed the gap between PC and Console games it's bought us proper online gaming in the comfort of our living rooms and like the Dreamcast were getting amazing games left, right and centre. The 360 will be remembered as the console that bought about the beginning of the end of PC gaming.

Those for me are the consoles that stand out. I have and do like all the consoles i've owned but the above are the ones that i feel are the elite.

Not at all, noise really isn't an issue, Reliability is far, far better now and MS offered 3 years anyway. It offers loads of AAA games, fantastic OS features, Xbox Live (prior to the last month), first to offer HD, HD Movie Marketplace, Gaming marketplace, Cheap price point and a fantastic controller.

Amiga 500 (if that counts),
SNES,
PC Engine - still have great memories of playing 4-player bomberman '94 and PC Kid. Great console, though too pricey.

I always wanted a PC Engine, it was a dream of mine when I was younger. A PC Engine with R-Type.

SNES

By far for me, favourite console with my favourite set of games

Super mario world is my all time favourite!

And the Playstation 1 was just brilliant.

Amiga (i used it as a console)
Ps1

I cant name a 3rd as i aint had all that experience with them.

ps3 or 360 in a list just aint right imo.

Love that 360 dont you? The pure fact its suffered from the issues you have mentioned (i dont care if they are fixed now) means i couldnt put one in my list. Every 360 ive used seems to have crashed (not 3rod) maybe im a curse lol
