Arrivals this morning.

*OT pedigree Responses :p *

Going pedigree is good because you can trace down and inherited problems, I dont want to spend £500 on a cat/dog thats going to get a disease or bone problem that his father etc had, with pedigree you usually know what your getting.

Then don't spend £500 on an animal. Every pet we've ever had has either been free or cost us a small contribution to an animal shelter.

If you dont want a pedigree then you dont spend £500 :p unless your friendly with a breeder and get one free.

LOL, everytime i scrolled down to see the "I can has cheeseburger" pic i just burst out laughing, but to be fair, Dave is a beast! :D he looks like he can warm your lap well ;)

the mother is very cute looking as are the kittens.

I was under the impression that mongrels tended to have fewer health issues than pedigrees, just not conforming to some ridiculous 'standard' for a set breed.

Can't believe breeders want to stop people breeding from the animals that they've sold, I'd tell them where to poke their cat and go elsewhere.

Dave rocks btw - can we have more pics of him being a big-ass pimp daddy?

that was my thought as well, it's often better (imo) to have a mongral/heinz whose parentage is largely known for a few generations than a lot of pedigree breeds that have often got a very restricted gene pool, especially if they've been bred for a certain look (a lot of pedigree breeds of dog for example have problems that are extremely common in pure breeds).

Having said that our mutt is an "almost" pedigree toy poodle, from memory both sets of his grand parents were pedigrees but his parents were never registered (or something like that).

Smallest one was pushed out by the mum mid-morning, wasn't holding body heat or eating. Tried heat packs and weening stuff, but no joy. :(

Eldest comes back from her mums tomorrow, she's looking forward to seeing the 5 kittens. Bother.

Thats true, selective breeding of animals for traits humans want, results in defective genes being passed on, and a much greater chance of genetic diseases as these recessive genes come together, which can't be detected without a genetic test, so knowing the lineage doesn't help you much there. Plus some of the traits pedigrees are bred for are problematic in themselves. Cross breeding is far better for species as a whole, which is why it's so annoying when people say you shouldn't breed an animal, just because it doesn't conform to their idea of a superior breed. Ironically they are the people who are making the species worse. It's due to humans huge genetic similarities that there are so many people with genetic illnesses.

It just shows you how greedy people are these days.
