just arrived..my personal review of 3870x2

3DMARK means crap when it comes to comparing GFX card performance , its just an excuse to see who's got the biggest epenis, ATI probably optimised the crap out of the drivers to get decent 3DM scores, yet they still suck in most games when compared to the competition.:o

Both Nvidia & ATI try to get the most out of 3DM.
Lets say they both optimize the crap out of the drivers to get decent 3DM scores & as most can see that ati come out on top.
Maybe if ATI had the same optimizing know how for games then ati would do just as well for games.

Its called delays and problems in manufacturing the original r600 core. It happens and thats all there is to it. Geforce fx ring any bells? This time around ati had no high end version of the core, mainly due to leakage and heat output. r600 is behind us and r700 is on the horizon.

That doesn't mean I need to be impressed by the X2 though, which is all I'm really talking about. I still haven't ruled out getting one, I was just hoping for more of an increase in performance from what I have now, and we should be past that stage now considering how long the GTX has been out for.

Hopefully the R700 will be better than NV's next core, as it'd be nice to own a gfx card again that's supported by a company that gives a crap about their customers, and not just when they feel threatened.

Then whats your point?

The timescale of ATI?

My original point was, the X2 isn't a very impressive card to someone who already owns a GTX or Ultra, as it only marginally beats it, despite using 2 of ATI's best cores. (in reply to post #171)

I'm aware it's currently the fastest card. :)

Having been playing with mine all afternoon, I can happily say. SHINY.
Yes it's not beating the ultra by much but seems to beat the pants off my housemates GTX. Also for the money tis really quite pleasant.

TBH the gap will widen with driver updates.

But when the 9800 hits ATI will be behind again.

Stop the GFX roundabout I want to get off!:p

I hope so, as I was all set to get an X2 this week but it just didn't seem worth the hassle considering the performance increase I would have gained. Will probably just wait for R700/G100 and get whichever is the best from those two.

Theres rumours about the GX2 having to have been downclocked as it gives out way to much heat, and needs way to much power, and so X2 will be faster, its going to be interesting. :)

yes thats true about the heat dissapation being too much (I believe it was fudzilla that reported but cant be sure) they will either downclock it or try an alternative method to cool it. tbh I dont think nv need an x2 to compete with ati. they have a strong single gpu solution and should just work on that.

Will be R700 i guess, as thats AMD's next gen, the G100's are not next gen, they are still over 1 year old 8800's, just are now Dx10.1 and have that HD stuff slapped on em (alledgedly), so if thats true, then its going to be Nvidia who are about 2 years behind, as they'll still be churning out 2006 8800's, like they are now still.:p

I just get the feeling the GX2 has fail written all over it, as they've done as they did with the 7950 GX2, slapped 2x cards together (2x PCB's), doesn't sound promising to me, just have to wait and see if they've learned anything from that bodge job. :D

AMD's X2 looks like the right approach imo, 2x cores on the 1x PCB, so it is a single card, not 2x gaffa taped together. :p

I have to agree,

I hated the GX2 with its two PCB design.

This X2 from ATI is a slicker design imo.Two cores on one PCB.

Doesn't suffer from games having to be crossfire compatible either like the

GX2 as if the game didn't support SLI it perfromed like a single 7900:o
