Agreed, to me doom 3 was almost the same as doom 1 and 2 and using the same tricks as 1 and 2 by the way i loved them (doom1 and 2 not so much 3 but 3 had great atmosphere) but times have moved on
To be fair it was stated by id they wanted it to be a retelling of the original doom. But for all their trumpeting about hiring a professional storywriter for it the story really never was shown enough to immerse players. You had the audio tapes and all but listening to them was more of an annoyance than anything. Thats where i think halflife 2 excelled, you're never directly told the story as the characters assume you've experienced the same timeline as them and know all about the war, but theres enough hints and clues in the dialogue and in the world if you look about to let you piece it together.
Imo thats the best piece of storytelling in a game in years, its a far cry from some guy walking upto you, going through 5 mins of dialogue telling you whats happened in a situation where the worlds been taken over and everyone on the planet knows what the score is.
In the endthough for doom 3 most people complained about the plodding combat pace and the fact that nothing really had any character to it due to the lighting. A lot of hardcore doom players expected to be swamped with enemies like in the original but pc's in 2004 had nowhere near the grunt needed to let this be a possibility.
