PC Gaming Is Dead!

Agreed, to me doom 3 was almost the same as doom 1 and 2 and using the same tricks as 1 and 2 by the way i loved them (doom1 and 2 not so much 3 but 3 had great atmosphere) but times have moved on

To be fair it was stated by id they wanted it to be a retelling of the original doom. But for all their trumpeting about hiring a professional storywriter for it the story really never was shown enough to immerse players. You had the audio tapes and all but listening to them was more of an annoyance than anything. Thats where i think halflife 2 excelled, you're never directly told the story as the characters assume you've experienced the same timeline as them and know all about the war, but theres enough hints and clues in the dialogue and in the world if you look about to let you piece it together.

Imo thats the best piece of storytelling in a game in years, its a far cry from some guy walking upto you, going through 5 mins of dialogue telling you whats happened in a situation where the worlds been taken over and everyone on the planet knows what the score is.

In the endthough for doom 3 most people complained about the plodding combat pace and the fact that nothing really had any character to it due to the lighting. A lot of hardcore doom players expected to be swamped with enemies like in the original but pc's in 2004 had nowhere near the grunt needed to let this be a possibility.

I dont think so, Only you people and the people on the steam forums seem to whine about how great valve is and how gaben is a sex god and steams a great idea and portal was innovative and ep2 was more of the same but its okay and tf2 cartoon style graphics are the **** and anything made with sauce is wikid.

Most other forums seem to have a more objective view.

iBot, you make me fol.

yes but what i meant in tricks was you go and pick something up the lights go out/flicker and something would happen like trap door or hidden door with monsters, i was going to say it felt like a cut down doom1/2 but thought that was a bit harsh

edit as doom 3 beening to narrow most of the time

That was another problem with doom 3, just repitition repitition repitition. Imps spawning in zombies waiting till you pased then opening a hidden door that seems to have been custom made to let them hide inside and ambush you...wtf

Doom 3 was a good game but the scare tactics did get old, very quickly. Once you've encountered the first scripted sequence, you've encountered them all.

I enjoyed it at the start but it did get stale incredibly fast. Was like little to no thought had been put into how the zombies would attack then they fell back to spawn ins and "monster closets".

Trouble with doom 3 for me is that doom1/2 and mechwarrior got me into pc gaming and for doom 3 to follow on from doom 1/2 and q1/2 ID had a lot to live up to with doom 3 and it really didn't.
Also with halflife lifting the bar some what and doom 3 at the same time as halflife 2 didn't help.

To be fair, the bosses were fairly intuitive (i.e. the one in Hell) but even then all it required was switching weapons to create the desired kill effect. At least it added more variety than the monsters though.

I do feel that Quake 4 is exactly the same, however the story in that game is a bit deeper, more structured.

Yeah, I remember one doom2 level where there were dozens of imps in one location.
Doom3 equivalent is 4 tops.

Anyway, I still prefer my PC over my 360. As much as I like the multiplayer accessibility on the console, I only play on it once or twice a fortnight, and I only own a handful of games.

agreed i like q4 better but i feel doom 3 had more atmospere as it made be jump more and every sound and flicker of the lights i expect something to happen with q4 i had none of that but enjoyed the story a lot more

For the sake of running with this let's take a few games and see where it takes us.

CS 1.6 -Hugely popular massively successful in both casual and pro gamer circles, still major money tournaments on going now.

CSS- More of the above.

HL and all it's love children- Great story superb engine huge amounts of fun to play and replay. A little frustrating for the wait for the episodes but I ca live with waiting for quality.

Portal- You seem to be the only person in the world who actually dislikes this which in my eyes makes your argument about as useful as a furry pencil case, funny to look at but not very practical.

TF2- Excellent fun for little cost, a lot of hours of fun to be had. A nice twist from the usual generic model and a great team game that has also done very well in clan gaming circles as well as the massive amount of people that play casually.

You also seem to hate the steam engine which I personally have nothing but praise for. I love having CD-less gaming it makes my life so much easier.

I'm not going to say valve are without their flaws but they have released some fantastic games and produced an excellent engine.

Also relating to the comparison price between PC gaming and console gaming. I don't know if people saw the custom PC PC-console test thing that was run last month but it did give a nice break down of where console gaming can be very expensive. There's also a good article this month on building a gaming PC for £450ish I think it is, which again shows that peoples ideas that console gaming is miles cheaper than PC gaming isn't always accurate.

True but doom 3 was a hardware hog, having the game swarm you with enemies would make any pc back then grind to a halt.

We all knew it was going to look great with the pics of the monsters on the web before it was out and knew it would be a hardware hog i think some people expected better level design as in larger levels i know i was one of them.

Ya was all tight corridors with small areas to prat about in. I think the biggest area in the game was the cyberdemon fight.
