Blu-ray Victorious

If we are going on specifications than the sound on laserdisc was better than dvd and d-vhs allows a higher bitrate than bluray - about as relevant as BD having more space than hd-dvd.

The wrong format won this time, incidentally i am more bluray than hd-dvd in collection but hd-dvd was the more consumer friendly format. Bluray is a victory for Sony, DRM and movie studios who like to dictate how we view film.

Not sure where you are getting this inaccurate information from

Anyone who said Sony would be in 3rd place sales wise 3 years ago would be branded insane. The PS3 is a failure and will not sell as many units as the PS or PS2 = fai;ure.

You heard it here first folks, quote me in a few years time ;)

Take into account that PS3 has been out a lot less time than the X360 and Sony is actually in 2nd place (but obviously that doesnt fit in with your speculation )

So that must mean that the X360 is a failure too and even the wii because neither are likely to sell as many as the PS2 (120 Million and counting)

I think you are diluding yourself

You mean unlike the ps1 and ps2 that were the first consoles of their generations ....

I couldnt care less about the PS3/360/wii war as i own all 3 but if i was at Sony the only thing i would see the PS3 at the moment is a failure - just like that chap who is at Sony who said it was a failure by their own projections.

Sony have actually won a format war!!???

Yes looks like history is repeating itself again, sonys 3.5" floppy disk and cd-rom formats and now blu-ray as well. Shockingly sucessful. Plus, memory stick is also doing quite nicely too now. Sony certainly know how to push (or rather force) their formats on consumers.

no-one at sony has said that - all they did was re-adjust how much they wanted to sell once it had been out everywhere for a year, so they have "only" sold 9 million or so, thats really a failure

stop being a plonker

Not really sure how they forced any of them - of course something like this is going to be designed for something in particular (whether its cd for digital music, or br for movies primarily) no one was forced to buy into either one - if anything BR was chosen by the consumer instead of another format, cant really say thats forcing it onto us

No, it really wasn't. This format war was decided by the studios and what content they released on each format, not the consumer choosing to buy into one format or the other. Consumers buy the content, not the format, and it was the content availability that decided this, the consumer was just along for the ride.

As I said, the best thing that came out of the war was a few concenssions regarding BR that wouldn't have occurred otherwise (mandatory managed copy, some studios choosing not to use region coding, PiP and interactive content that some like to claim were always going to be the plan...) But the format the studios wanted (because it put the content provider over the content consumer in rights focus) won.

CD-Rom formats?, do you mean CDR? or CD in general because Phillips invented the CD.

I'm not a SOny or PS3 fan, but I can celarly see you're talking rubbish. The PS3 is picking up hugely sales-wise, and now that Blu-Ray is the winner it will sell a ton more. It will be profitable.

exactly, given time the ps3 will be selling a lot more consoles then it is now, people are buying it purely as a br dvd player and forgetting the console, heck even i was close to it the other week as imo and many others its a great machine given lots (games console and br player that is updateable) for an acceptable price.

what does this mean for xbox? like if hd dvd fails will we be seeing a br player addon? thinking about it are the xbox games never going to be bigger then a dvd as hd isn't standard? surely one day soon the games are not going to fit ont a standard dvd so will be needing the extra space the br discs have.

Wow i didnt realise this was a Sony fanboy place.

Lets have a look at the stats.

The ps3 is selling at slower rate than the ps1 or ps2 did, it has sold less at the same time in its lifespan than either revious consoles. It has a lower attach rate and has less games sold. It is failing and is costing Sony money. It may well turn around and outsell both but currently it is a failure.

It is not the lead console for developer, games are made first on the 360 and ported to the ps3 - this means that if a game will generally look better on the 360.

All these things hurt Sony, it is not anymore powerful than a vastly cheaper and older console and is vastly more expensive to code for - hence developers port rather than develop on it.

Sales figures wise it is doing ok at the moment but MS still outsell it and realistically they only have europe and USA as no one in Japan touches the 360. Obv the only winner this round is Nintendo as they outsell both everywhere.

Let us forget the Sony fanboy point of view here and compare it to the ps2. Sony are losing sales money and development lead and there is your answer.

the ps2 didnt have any competition

and hasnt the ps3 sold as many(or nearly , not sure now) in its first year as the 360 did in its first year ?

just because its not doing as well as its older console doesnt make it a "failure"

ill take a guess that the ps3 will still be around in 5 years making them money like the ps2 still is now...

reckon the 360 will be ?

Ahh of course, so anyone with a differing opinion is a "Sony fanboy", been a while since i've heard that nugget of wisdom thrown. My respect for your intelligence and judgement has just shot up dramatically.

Anyway, back tot he real world... the XBOX 360 has been out a lot longer than the PS3, is more established, and due to its close affinity with PC is indeed much easier to code for. I don't think anyones denying that, but then again I don't think anyone did in the first place?

The only utterly ridiculous posts in this thread that could be slapped with any sort of dramatic, fanboyish nonsense have been yours. Lets see the quotes shall we...

Well if having a failing console games wise and loking like they will never make money on it - yes they were wrong ;)

Bluray will never be the better format simply due to region coding - end of.

Because those are rational, intelligent posts that come accross as mature and level-headed, right? Sigh.

Why are you defending the PS3, it is failing to sell as Sony wanted - this is not opinion but fact.

Lets step back from the Sony defending, remember the 360 is also failing - it is selling at a slower rate the than the Xbox did and is not streaking away from the PS3 when in reality it should - it is cheaper, has more games, has better versions of multiplatform games and a better pad and online system. Why not bring this up, why just try and defend Sony ??

The only company doing well this round is Nintendo, incidentally Nintendo made the most profit in the last 2 generations and will again this generation. Sony and Microsoft are all about units shifted and both are failing, Sony more-so as they expected to waltz in and sell as well as the PS2 did.

Please explain to me how a system that didnt sell out at launch, has missed all sales targets even the revised lower targets and is miles behind its yardstick is not failing.

Why are you defending the PS3, it is failing to sell as Sony wanted - this is not opinion but fact.

how is it fact? unless you are part of sony, which im pretty certain you are not as you are against them, how on earth could you possibly know what sony wanted? your not seriously basing this failing thing all on something the people advertising the ps3 said are you? if i was selling a product which i knew was going to have a lot of competition, you know what i would do as does every other company, act really confident in your product so people think it must be amazingly great as even with fierce competition you still expect massive sales. This of course is not true, with fierce competion there is going to be a decrease in sales.
