Kosovo declares independance today.

So....

"but in Belgrade up to 2,000 angry Serbs converged on the U.S. embassy, hurling stones, smashing windows and lighting firecrackers."

The poor yanks always get it no matter what the fight is about.

And why are the serbs angry? What's wrong with people wanting to rule their own lands?

Surely that's the best way for peace for everyone to be ruled but it's majority whilst respecting the minority. It's only when the minority hold power that we have problems.

It's the serbs in Kosovo that are angry as they are now loving in a country that isn't run by Serbia, but by the majority Albanians.

Did you get that from Fox by any chance?

You're right, to a point, the serbs see it something like yorkshire wanting to become independent or something.

Then again, we haven't ethnically cleansed yorkshire recently.

Ive no idea where I'm going with this...

america doesnt liek communism so it smashed up yugoslavia

Or the people of yugoslavia, belonging to multiple ethnic groups, when they weren't living under a dictator (who was actually, as dictators go, not too bad), decided they didn't like each other terribly much and tore their own country apart

It's always fun when crap like this happens in the Balkans! You just know that some sort of ethnic cleansing and conflict are lurking in the not to distant future.

Kosovo is (or was) part of Serbia, not a country.

How did Kosovo end up full of immigrants to the point of them starting a civil war? Alan Clark was right.

I think the americans backed the Kosovans and really helped this to be possible.

Kosovo was a region which always had a majority albanian population, historically it's been like that. It wasn't an issue previously because it wasn't part of serbia but part of yugoslavia which had a hugely diverse ethnic make up. When yugoslavia broke up and kosovo was bundled with serbia it became an issue.

The Serbian PM is blaming the US as well.

Serbia's Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica blamed the US which he said was "ready to violate the international order for its own military interests".

"Today, this policy of force thinks that it has triumphed by establishing a false state," Mr Kostunica said.

I doubt they would've declared independence without US backing though so in a sense they are 'to blame'. It's a shame they couldn't sort it through the UN instead of unilaterally having to declare independence.
