The PlayStation 'HOME' Information Thread!

Home is nothing like second life tho, at all.

Online community, In which you can create your own character, you sport your own place, upgrade and change your place, you converse with other community members, while walking around in a virtual world

hmm, You sure?

Yes, Home does a lot more than that. But it's a lot like second life at it's core

SCEA actually did produce a far superior online service, but SCEJ rejected them. There has never been very good communication between SCEA and SCEJ. Kaz Hirai has only recently started improving relations across the Sony international development scene. It's just staunch jingoism on the Japanese's side of things.

Home is been developed by SCEE, easily the best team/reigon for the job :) Studio London I think,

So much potential, but it should have been a part of the PS3 when the PS3 launched.

indeed, I do think HOME is a great idea, I just think that by the time its up and running with enough content and user base the PS3 will be in it's twilight years, hopefully they will continue it into the next playstation

o_O

It will be out before the second year of the PS3 has come by. It's also free and accessible to anyone with a PS3 and internet connection; a good chunk of the 8 million PS3s sold out there. Now you're saying 'oh too late hope it gets to PS4'. Jumping to conclusions and strange evaluations aren't you?

The main element of HOME is lost on me, It's just not something I 'do'.... but I don't knock anyone that thinks it's 'great' in the same way I just 100% don't get WoW, but don't have any issues with any of my mates who do play it...

I am another person that just wants the cross game elements of 'LIVE' on the PS3... and I clearly I'm not the only one..

If Sony where going to get his feature licked with HOME, I'm sure it would have been shouted from the rooftops, so I will assume it isn't..

This leads me onto thinking why? and then the cynicism creeps in..

- If it's not technically possible due to the current XMB, then why don't they just redesign the XMB, it's only software.. why couldn't they have spent the resource on this rather then HOME.
- If it is technically possible, then why aren't they doing it?

Both, and I admit, cynically, lead me to think that they want HOME to be a big revenue stream through microtransacted furniture/clothing/etc and advertising, this means they want you in HOME as much as they can, so will never give me what I want..

This isn't some fanboyish opinion, just someone's opinion from a person that doesn't 'need' home, doesn't gel with MMO community style stuff, but does want to just play games..

I'd genuinely love for people who are into the whole MMO community thing to try and explain the positves of such interaction etc, what the 'reward' is, because I just don't see what in HOME benefits me as an individual, and the consumer on a whole other then advertising and microstransacted revenue..

well if you don't need HOME then you don't have to use it, whats the problem, there's a lot of features in LIVE that i don't need yet i'm FORCED to pay for them.

LOL.. fanboys to the rescue... :D

Thanks for that, I thought Sony would send Henchmen around to my house and make me use it :D
In the same way the MS henchmen turned up and prised my credit card from my wallet and made me buy LIVE.. :D

I don't mind you replying, but for the love of god actually read stuff before hitting the reply button in a fit of anger.. I only voiced the opinion that I wished SONY spent the time developing what I wanted (selfishly I admit) rather then something I didn't.. I mean OMG, that's ludicrous, how dare I say that.. :D

Yes the XMB is lacking in certain features that the X360 does so well. Sony however should be commended for the improvements they already have made to the system as a whole from firmware updates since launch. More are coming but theirs also a lot the PS3 can do the X360 cant do so theirs no point nit picking.

You also have to remember MS have been offering great online features since Xbox 1. Sony are much newer to this area but personally i think "Home" is going to be a breath of fresh air and personal customisation from within a virtual lobby or if you want to say virtual lobby but also combining features like "xbox live arcade" all into a 3d enviroment is not only interesting but genre defining. Self customisation or personalisation is the future. GT4 photomode PGR series, FM2 with its great car paint scheme designer have proved such in the past as has gamertags and rewards for gaming achievements. Forth coming titles like little big planet will further expand creativity amongst gamers and having online identies or kudos for their works. Thats rewarding for many and benifit of just about everyone.

Its going to be massive and eventually when games utilise it for swapping game files (eg GT5 ghost laps or photos) with easy friend cummication via text/voice or video then when it eventually gets going properly it will more than likely exceed Xbox Live.

To make a point out of the fact that Sonys doing it for profit, then hello, as thats what business is all about. Its not compulsary but id say its going to be a major feature for Sony and help promote PS3 dominance with increased new games and blu ray becoming more standardised within the next year.

nm..

I think I need to just sell my PS3, we are all different, I am the sort of old git that just plays games on his console, and I clearly I don't gel with Sony's vision, which doesn't seem to cater for the basics I need, which is a shame, I'd ditch live tomorrow if I could just get the basics..

Sorry to pollute the thread.. carry on..

are you feeling alright?, firstly i didn't reply in anger, lol - thats your perception of my reply of which your wrong :p, and secondly there is nothing fanboyish about my reply - your the one being cynical about it.

McManicMan, I e-mailed you back about 2 weeks ago and got no response yet, didn't want to bother you with numerous e-mails though :).

On topic, HOME, for me, is the most interesting thing coming to any consoles because it has a lot of potential, and if it's just right it will be brilliant, however if they miss out on stuff then it could be a short lived fad. I personally cannot wait, it could be PS3's WoW.

Rumor: Home is coming out very, very soon, in-game XMB done

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A member of the Playstation Forums claims to have some insider access to a variety of news relating to PS3 Home and in-game XMB features. He says that PSedge dev kits released an update and the new Home libraries were introduced. It is claimed that a game must be able to integrate into Home and a game must be able to support accomplishments. Moreover, every game that is coming out soon now supports in-game XMB and those already out will have to be patched. All in all home is said to be very close as well as in-game XMB.

Quote:
Anyways, very exciting stuff happened on Monday (The one that just past). The PSedge dev kits, recieved an update. So whatever, we take a look, and the major addition, was that the TRC's were updated, and the new HOME libraries were brought in.

What does this mean? A TRC is a checklist of things a game must have for Sony to approve, in order for them to give the "Go-Ahead" on releasing the game on their console. This checklist has things like: Can't crash, Load times under 10 seconds, and things like that.

Two new ones were added: A game must be able to integrate into Home, a game must support "Accomplishments". Right there, two important things, the PS3 system for achievements is called "Accomplishments", and Home is coming out VERY VERY VERY Soon.

Then, we got a changelog, and in-game XMB is almost worked out. Every game that's coming out now, supports in-game XMB, every game that already came out, has to get patched. (Naturally, only first party games will get a patch, I doubt Ubisoft is going to patch Assassin's Creed).

So yeah, it boils down to, Sony got everything figured out. I don't know what's the hold up, but from a developers perspective, HOME is set up and completed, and In-Game XMB is on the verge of being completed and released."

looks like Accomplishments are the new achievements

i wish they would just release it now, im tired of waiting, i dont care if it has bugs, ut seems to work fine, they could release updates every 2-4 weeks to get rid of the bugs, i think sony are waiting far too long now, its been over a year since the console was released and still no sign of home

just release it goddamit so we can all beta test it and use it, then update it accordingly

From what I've heard; you will have a virtual trophy cabinet where you can show off your awards from ingame (with trophys designed by developers, and not just generic). Also games will unlock content for inside Home, PS3 games can be launched from within Home, blah blah. It's to give the PlayStation and edge and I can definatly see why people would like to meet gamers here than ingame. You can meet a person at the cinema, have a chat, get along, find out what games you both own and then you can play them together. It's more people driven than game driven. XBL revolves around you liking a game or playing a game to death so that you make friends in that game etc. Home can help you make friends outside of the games, virtually hang out, do some interesting things, listen to some music together in your appartment. If this seems pointless to you, doesnt an MP3 player that you navigate with your fingers sound a bit pointless when buttons are so much more efficient and simpler? The iPhone and iPod touches are raping all the competition. Here is Sony's attempt to rape both XBL and Wii by offering a USP that involves both gamers and NON-games, or casual gamers - who may prefer just chatting than shooting you in the head.

Bravo Sony. I'm playing my Xbox less and less now I own a PS3 and a PSP.
