This is for 16 - 17 year olds

I'm 16.
I'll be going to college this september and getting EMA.
As far as I know I don't plan to get a job, but it may change.

I'm also past the age asked for, but I had a part-time job from the day I turned 16 (burger flipper!). Tell him to get a job and stop being so lazy. I wouldn't offer him incentives... I do the opposite; don't give him any money and threaten to start charging rent if he doesn't get off his arse.

During my time at university every person I met who hadn't had a job fell into one of two categories: Spoilt brat with no common sense / Total failure at life. There was no inbetween.

There is no excuse not to get a job other than laziness. There are many flexible jobs that fit happily in with school/ college/ uni.

I'm 18 now and at Uni. I worked in a local shop from the age of 14 right up to 18 when i moved away. I did about 10-20 hours a week, this was also in full time education. It wasn't too bad when i was at school, as i just used to do 2 hours everyday right after school, and the odd bit of weekend work.

The pressure really built up when i started going college, i lived about 7 odd miles away and with our useless bus service, it was just as quick on a pushbike . My parents gave me no money to fund my college expenses, so i paid for my own food, the cost of a £400 bike, a new computer, college fees etc. I also had to pay my way for my own luxury items and going out money. Managed all this on about £45 a week, it was always a push and i'd often go without eating at college.

I still got by and really do thank my parents for it, i didn't realise how independent i had grown to most my friends. I also found moving away a piece of *****, and no trouble at all.

Leave the kid alone, He will be working for the day he's 21 until he dies no doubt. At least give him until then :)

Hello Killa_ken, absolutely not in my opinion. If he is still at college or decides to go to university but stays at home, he shouldn't help his parents out in any way i.e. paying a bit of rent money? :)

Ok how many of you meet all the following criteria (or did)

1, Fall into the age bracket
2, Go to college full time
3, Have a job (part time)

I'm in school still, final year. But i'm getting a part time job at a place down the road. Only weekends, but still, any money is a lot of money when you have no bills or anything to pay!

What reasons does he have for not wanting a job? I'm sure they may be justified :)

I'm 18, at college 4 days a week and have a job

But the job is only 1-2 days a week :)

Thing is i don't really need a job atm cause im alright with money - But if i had to i would

Although i wouldn't have much 'free' time, tell him he can buy lots of beer/clothes/takegirlsout with a job :)

16.
Full time at high school, sixth form after
Part time real job plus blogging on the internet nets me nigh on £300 a month :)

1, Yeah 16
2, Yeah
3, Nope

For me, I don't need a job right now, I get EMA which covers anything I need and I never ask my parents for money so I think I don't need one.

Also depending on what subjects (assuming A Levels) a person is doing, they literally might not have time for a job. One of my friends wants a job, but he gets so much work to do, and combined with Duke of Edinborough he just doesn't have time for one.

tbh, it would be unwise to force him into getting a job that runs along side his college time, unless he wants to do it. Perhaps he might have some worries that it might impact into his college studies? Imagine this, he flunks out of college .... 'well you made me get that damn job!!!!'.

When I was at uni i got temp jobs during the summer breaks and worked part time on the uni it helpdesk. Didnt do squat in my spare time during school/college though.

I work at Lakeland Limited for reference. Want any expensive kitchinwear? I'm your man...

I was at college when EMA was being trialled. I did not qualify for EMA yet half the people in my class did. I worked every weekend and indeed still do whilst at Uni - it allowed/allows me to buy things I want, and run a car.

At college it was very annoying working every weekend to bring in the same money the EMA scroungers were getting simply for turning up to the same lectures as me.

Yup go to college, am 17, and work all day on a Saturday and sometimes during the work in retail!

Tell me about it - in sixth form I had friends who used to just be able to sit at home and get money, while i was having to work all day on my saturday.

Its even worse at uni now!
