Virgin to Increase speed for free

I've just had a call from Virgin Media, asking how I was with their service etc.

I won't go into the boring details, but she told me that I will be getting a free upgrade from 20mb to 50mb around the end of February or early March - I'm in Liverpool btw.

Cool sounds good. Where abouts in Liverpool. I'm in L15 and wondered if I'd get upgraded to the 50mb service. *hopes*

Would be nice to have 5mb upload ontop for free.

Hopefully our student house insept has cable (almost certain), awesome having 50meg between 4 of us :)

I'm L20 - lets hope the person I spoke to was well informed and what they said is correct.

50mbit in 2009?

On Tuesday, he told a Broadcasting Press Guild lunch that Virgin Media would continue to offer a service to existing customers who moved out of its coverage area. But he added: “Our strategy, offnet, is actually not that important.”

The board of Virgin Media had agreed the investment needed to begin raising broadband speeds on its network from a maximum of about 20 megabits a second now to 50mbps by the fourth quarter of this year, he said, with the roll-out to be completed early next year.

The group believed that “hundreds of thousands” of customers would sign up for the faster speed within the next few years, he said, without setting a clear timetable or disclosing the likely pricing of the 50mbps product.

Mr Berkett also made clear that Virgin Media no longer aspired to compete with BSkyB for premium content such as films and sports rights. “In premium TV we do not have a competitive advantage and the profit growth is stagnant,” he said.

Virgin Media would not spend its capital on premium TV unless a change in the regulatory landscape made it more financially attractive, he added, in a sharp diversion from his predecessor’s ambitions to take on BSkyB.

Because the technology of their network does not allow it.
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing...

The reason they don't offer high uploads is that it would directly compete with their business leased lines. Why would a small business hosting their own equipment buy a LL costing several thousand a year when they can just get a cable connection for a fraction of the cost?

Also - where is the logic in a line that can download X amount of data not being able to upload the same amount of data?

Lets hope you have the correct info. I was told that the 50mbps service will be a whole new tariff

Thats never gonna happen Im afraid...

what about us 2mb folk. From 300K -> 512K -> 1MB -> 2MB all free upgrades. So we get left behind? Do we get moved up to 4MB?
Probably not since the type of customers that take the lowest tier of BB just want to have BB presence and enjoy the advantages over dial-up for the same pricing. Id be surprised if 2Mb changes any time soon...

i had a lot of problems with my V.M 20Mb service. but after changing the modem for the 256 model with the newer chipset this thing flys now

Virgin Media 256 (from February / March 2008)

The 256 model will be yet again supplied to Customer specification by Ambit ( www.ambitbroadband.co.uk ). From the outside it is identical to the 255 model, but features a revised Broadcom chipset, the BCM3349KFBG

This modem is still in a black Ethernet only housing, and is still "Dual Mode", and will be deployed across the whole Virgin Media network, including the ex-Telewest platform.

Does support 10 and 20 Mbps Tier of Service, is capable of 40Mbps+
