BMW drivers

The heater thing was really annoying too, the heater was set to 30degs, so I lowered it to 20degs but it wouldnt budge until later I worked out you had to turn the wheel by the vents.

that scroller by the vents is actually quite useful
shame it's in the iDrive on the E60..

I think most people are aware of the BMW stereotype so now they only remark on BMW drivers poor driving skills. They ignore the fact that there are plenty of idiots in other brands.

To be fair, the BMW brand attracts idiots more than other brand.

Why?

BMW is seen, rightly or wrongly, by many people as a prestigious, sporting brand. Therefore your average sales jerk, who thinks he is awesome, is attracted to a BMW. It's prestigious, which is good becuase he can show everyone he's better than them. It's sporting, which is also good becuase he likes to drive like he pitches his sales presentations.

So our aspirational little twirp rushes out and ticks the '320d M Sport' box on his company car order form. He wouldnt even consider a Mondeo or a Mercedes.

So it's probably true that yes, the idiot:nice person ratio of BMW owners is higher than any other brand this side of the Citroen Saxo.

Shame the prestige is tainted with the fact they're common as muck :D

It's a poor mans prestige ;)

Confusing words from the person so desperate to own one he's asked about buying 316's, 318's and old 520's

It's hard to make a product which is generally accepted as being pretty much class leading in every segment it enters (6/7 and Z4 excepted) and then... not sell any at all.

You're the forums very own living example

I wouldn't use that wording, but I have to agree.

I see more and more BMW's than ever now, with local private hire firms now stocking fleets of 5 series. My partner wanted a 3 series as a move up from a micra, but she has been put off by that. Could argue the same for most cars!

Hardly. I've already said on many occasions that I'd have bought the same car irrepsective of badge, and besides, I don't tailgate people, I indicate when changing lanes and am generally a very courteous driver.

Did you actually have a point or did you just see an opportunity to snipe at me?

Oh please I'm hardly desperate, I have the cash, I'd of bought one by now if I was. I fully understand it's a poor mans prestige doesn't affect my purchase of it though, I couldn't care less what people think or feel about what I drive.

No getting round the fact it is a poor mans prestige, BMW even market the lower models to the people who just want to impress the Jones with their badge, now this also shows how much the prestige which you so love to talk about is tainted these days.

Fox you do seem a bit blinkered mate.

Sigh.. how predictable. Are we now going to get 10 replies agreeing with him from people who've never met me? How can you all take the **** out of my slow driving style AND criticise me of being the perfect example of a stereotypical BMW driver?

Honestly if you'd only keep some consistency with your insults you'd have half a chance of sounding credible :p

:) Fox, you're great

How, given the equivilent models from Mercedes and Audi's cost the same and a bottom of the range 3 Series will set you back £20,000? If you must use such wide of the mark phrases where does that place your Focus? Sub-poor-man?* This is about as daft as those ridiculous opinions that an Aston V8 Vantage is a poor mans Aston or that a Porsche Boxster - yours from a staggering 40 grand - is a poor mans Porsche.

*Devils advocate, you know I've nothing against the Focus.

BMW drivers ARE in fact different than 95% of motorists. Let me explain... sure, they are fine cars, built by zee Germans, nice quality, nice spec, cost above average new BUT.. most people buy them because of the badge alone.

Buying this higher 'breed' of car makes them think they are above their peers, it's all very sad.. and it's pretty much the only make of car used as 'penis extension' that is, well.. slightly limp. (generally so, m series is a exception)

Most BMWs on the roads seem to be second hand, same price as a average family car new... why is this ?,

You've got a bit of a point here IMO.

I think the "Typical BMW driver" stereotype comes about mainly through people who would typically buy say a £14k new Vectra, but instead they get a bottom of the range, or 2nd hand BMW instead and then think that their poverty spec 316 is the dogs danglies simply because it's a BMW

There's no denying that BMW produce some very good cars but I lost my respect for them when they started producing the 316 Compact. I remember my neighbour bought one and it was the ultimate in poverty. It had less luxuries than my Elise yet he seemed to think it was a presige motor simply cos of the marque.

I agree in part but before the 316 Compact was the 316 saloon - introduced in the 1970's, it had a wheezy engine, wasn't very fast, and had 4 wheels and a seat. How was it different?
