Battlefield: Bad Company

The Kotaku preview has me feeling a bit mixed about this one:

So the way destructible environments work in Battlefield: Bad Company is pretty much this: trees can be knocked over and walls can be blown through. But a building's frame will always stay intact, even if a million bajillion nuclear bombs were to drop in close proximity.

I know, the compromise doesn't sound so bad. A guy is shooting you from a window. You shoot your grenade launcher, blowing away his cover. Then you shoot him in the ass until he dies.

This part is fun, no doubt. And it opens up a slew of new strategies.

But where the game becomes less fulfilling is during those McGuyeresque moments of improvisation. For instance, you are on the bottom floor of a two-story building and decide, what the hell, I'll blow the floor out from under the sniper who's upstairs. This doesn't work. And the same seemed to apply for the moments when you could get above a building and wanted to make a surprise entrance through the roof. Certain things don't blow up that really should.

BF MC had dedicated servers and it was one of the least laggiest games Ive ever played online.

I dont think I ever got one laggy game ever :p

I hosted my own matches however so I dont know how that worked with dedicated servers.

Battlefield 2 had 64 player servers too

They wont sort out the tearing because they are too lazy and want to do the least work for the best results. The gfx have hardly got bad reviews so i doubt they would do much work in that department. But i hope im wrong.

wondering whether to get this

it looks good, but im guessing its going to very similar to BF3 on the PC. Now as well as a PS3 ive also got a top notch DX10 gaming PC.

do i bother with this, or just wait for the real deal BF3 on PC.

Battlefield Modern Combat differed quite a bit from the Battlefield PC games, I'd wait and see.

Or just get both, chances are they will play quite different and Bad Company could be pretty sweet, Battlefield 3 should be another great installment on the PC.

I thought it worked in a similar way to Warhawk where there are a few dedicated servers but mostly publicly hosted on consoles.

Not that it matters now but come to think of it - I actually seem to remember the option to host a game being something like "Request new server" or something similar... so I think you did control your own dedicated server.

I was watching some crappy gamers channel this morning and they showed loooads of exclusive gameplay and interview with the DICE guys of bad company - after watching it I'm actually very excited for the game, It seems like modern combat only better and with un-funny jokes :p

It was on Gamer.TV on the weekend, and it looks excellent, certainly on my to buy list..

There was a good explanation of why building frames stay intact, they could have had it 100% destructible, but you need some integrity of vantage points, etc, or the you could easily find yourself in a hopeless situation with no way back..

I think this particular implementation of uber destructability adds a new dimension to the FPS that hopefully may make this a really standout title..
