8800 GTS OC2 640MB - Where'd it go???

about 6 months ago I finally got round to building myself a really nice gaming rig. I bought a BFG 8800 GTS OC2 640MB and was really pleased with it as i had been with my 7800 BFG, but I'm not contemplating adding a second one into the mix, but have been unable to find another one of these cards.

BFG have placed it in the legacy products section, OcUK and other venders dont seem to stock it anymore which leaves me with ebay! (I am unwilling to get from ebay as I have previously had trouble with non-helpful sellers in the past)

Where has this card gone, why is it no longer available... :(

You could get away with buying two 9600 GT's, it'd perform similarly to the 2x 8800 GT's, cost less, and you could sell the old GTS.

No that is the slower one mines the overclocked one:

8800 GTS OC2

would it be worth going for two of THESE then?

I want to stick to BFG

And what would be the benefits of spending an extra £40 though for two of THESE?

I realise yours is pre-oc'd but they all clock about the same anyway, all you are paying for is for them to flash the bios for you at a high stock speed.

As for 2 x GT's yes, it'd be faster than 2 x GTS 640MB's by a considerable margin.

Personally I don't think its worth paying for pre-oc'd cards.

you would be best going the 2X 9600gt or 2X 8800GT route
at stock they will be ok in sli - the reason i can suggest for you to get an ocd card is if you yourself are unsure or not happy about running the risk of blowing up your gpu due to a bad oc

Any one want to buy a 8800 GTS OC2 then? ;)

I will see about changing it over soon, I think I may go for two 9600's as they are cheaper, and the speeds etc seem to be the same, although these stream processors, the 9600 has only 64, where as the 8800 has 112!!! what does that mean?

The best value combo is probably 2x OCUK value 8800GT, but be warned these are ECS, Palit and Xpertvision cards and they don't necessary have the stock single slot cooler has pictured on OCUK site.

Have a look at the benchmarks for 9600GT, the performance is very close to 8800GT in some cases but apparently the extra performance is due to the auto-overclock in the background through increasing PCI-E bus when used on Nvidia based mobo with linkboost. So don't expect performance close to the reviews unless you are prepared to overclock it yourself.

Have a look at this thread here.

I dont really want to go to cheap cards, I'd rather spend a little more and get something that is likely to last.

BFG's lifetime warrenty is also a great selling point for me.

Just thought I would also give you the spec of the rest of the machine:

AMD x2 6000+
ASUS CrossHair
2GB Corsair XMS2-6400C4
2x WD Raptor 740ADFD (Raid 0)
Enermax Noisetaker 485W

Its a tidy computer with the 8800GTS and does work well, just want it to be able to keep up with games etc say in about 3 years.

Why, what possible use is a 'life time warrenty' when computer technoligy moves on so fast anyhow. You won't be using those cards 3 years from now, let alone, 5 or 10, or 20. :)

485W PSU is prolly not going to be up to the job of running SLi 8800's...

Though to look at it from a different angle....

That PSU should have no problems running a single ATI 3870X2 card - which will offer the same sort of performance that 2x 8800GT in SLI would.

GTS 640 eats up about 220W under load.

SLi GTS 640's you are prolly looking at a good 350-400W under load.

3870X2 eats up about 290W under load.

hmmm, seems a bit high tbh but I'll look into it anyway, and perhaps see if I can rig something up to get a decent reading straight from cards.

(Im assuming it draws all of its power direct from the power supply though?)

It is two GPU's drawing not much more than the single GPU you currently have...

No they don't. 75w max from the PCI-e slot and 75w from the 6 pin cable.

That seems to make a bit more sense, over 200W for the GFX alone is on the high side, considering a generic 350W powersupply only actually kicks out about 300W continuous (the 350W is peak Maximum and can only be sustained momentarily) and if the GFX uses that much it wouldnt leave much power for anything else! (I've not seen many pre-build computers that are rated much above 350W)
