Smoking stupidity gone too far?

Smoking in movies is one of my pet hates especially when its done by people who don't smoke.
Its the one thing I pick up on straightaway :
You see an actor/actress with a fag on, they move it towards their mouth, camera switches angles, goes back to original actor who is now putting their smoking hand down.
Its so obvious that they are pretending to smoke so that the film makers are paid by the sponsors.

Quoting my own post:

I'm watching Deep Impact now and two women are talking to each other over a table.
The older one has got a pretend cigarette she's using as a prop.
This is what I want banning.

While I'd agree the idea is stupid (and that is me being polite) can we not blame it on PC please? It isn't about political correctness, it is an anti-smoking group with an (obvious) axe to grind.

In the real world though nobody gives a **** if the guy next to them is smoking or not... its the politically correct people that have drummed up the idea that people really hate smokers and have gotten them sent outside

Completely irrational. Having a character smoke makes a statement about their personality/mentality. You can't expect writers to have to avoid this just because the actor doesn't smoke IRL. Next you'll be telling me actors shouldn't be allowed to play murderers unless they have previously killed someone.

Two women talking across a table does not need one of them pretending to smoke.
It is product placement and nothing more.
If the character was somebody who was known to smoke in a factual film then I see no problem.
Its when its done for the product that it riles me up.

Indeed, what would be slightly more effective (but still totally stupid) would be if they were to legislate that all people smoking in newly created films must be portrayed as complete losers.
Though with the welfare state we've got at the moment.. The kids might still find that something to aspire to :p

The best characters in films generally are losers.

Films are about journeys either a big shot get's humbled or a loser gets the girl.

there would be an 18 certificate on many old childrens films, correct me if I am wrong but there are people smoking in "Mary poppins" and "Bedknobs and Broomsticks"

18+ rated disney films?

It isn't about political correctness - at least not in the commonly accepted definitions of the term - smoking or the banning of it is not about avoiding offence to a racial/cultural/other shared identity group unless you are going to split the World into smokers/non-smokers which would be a pretty useless covering description. So that is why I ask it isn't lumped in as an argument for or against political correctness since it has nothing to do with it. Perhaps some politically correct people (whatever that term defines) are against smoking but just because some are does not mean all are and it cannot go under that umbrella term/insult.

What's irrational is that he's watching Deep Impact ;)

What about computer games then? I was thinking the other day when playing TF2 as the spy, he smokes, how long before we don't see that kind of thing?

PK!
