2008 Malaysian GP - Race 2/18

47,000? Is there a list of these exploits anywhere?

I may have been slightly exaggerating with that number :p That said, those grey areas have gone now with the Car Of Tomorrow/Today design that they're running these days....to be replaced by all new grey areas!

A simple rule to fix the coasting back to the pits problem.

Each sector time must be within 107% of your fastest recorded.

I like this idea. Either that or scrap the race fuel rule. As it stands it really doesn't make a lot of sense that the final shoot out fails to show who is going to be fastest on race day.

I do like the present format a lot as it keeps the excitement (and amusement levels) going all the way through the hour, but the final session is still not right.

And it won't be until it's a shoot-out with the cars at their absolute fastest configuration (low fuel).

Even getting the teams to pre-set their fuel levels before entering the 3rd segment would be enough I think.

Ahh right, I thought it was extremely high but thought it was one of those NASCAR tall stories rather than a JRS one. ;)

I think they need to change it so that all the cars must take on a set amount of fuel before Q1 starts but be disallowed from refuelling until Q3 is over. You'd have cars going progressively faster throughout the entire session and the dissociation of qualifying load from race fuel load would boost the strategic side of things since teams would no longer have to "show their hand" as it were during Q3.

I like that ^^

TBH, i think F1 needs a radical remake over.

Engines
Allow engines to be developed but have a fixed budget. E.g. £20mil
De limit the amount of revs.
Allow manufactures to use different type of materials instead of just aluminium for the block.
Keep a limit on the bore and stroke.
Limit it to 4 valves per cyclinder.
Etc

Chassis/Body
Impose a limit of say 1.5 tonnes of aerodynamic downforce per car. (test this in wind tunnels im assuming)
Take a hack saw to those lame winglets etc to smooth out the look of the car.
Etc

Tyres/Suspension
Take the groves out but still keep the soft tyre white line.
Allow for dynamic suspension or whatever it was called.
Lower the ride height.
Etc

Drive Aids
Keep them as they are.

Quailfying
Keep what it is now but something needs to change for Q3 not sure what.

But these are only a few ideas and the rule book has 1000's of rules.

Just to pass my comment on the penaltym being a McLaren fan boy.

Its valid enough. Both sat on racing line for no reason and knew who was out and what they stood to gain.

Intentional or not they should have been on the right hand side of the track.

I think its fairly clear from this thread the general consensus of the fans (yes, the fans, remember us Max, were the one who watch the sport....) is that all these penalties and fixes and rule fiddles to do with qualifying are caused by a single problem - Qualifying with race fuel!

GET RID OF IT!

GET RID OF IT!

qualifying with race fuel has always been a completely stupid idea ever since they brought it in. every year they tweak the qualifying system again, each time to try and fix the problem that qualifying with race fuel started in the first place.

and they reason they brought it in, in the first place, to mix things up an bit and create more race overtaking, is hampered by it anyway.

assuming most teams use a similar strategy, which they do, then the pace they have in qualifying is going to be the same as they pace they have in the race. afterall it's the same car, with the same setup and same fuel load. why would the pace be any different.
so if you are on the track behind a car that is slightly faster than you, why would you overtake it?

they should take it right the way back to the 1 hr session with 12 laps each. maybe even give them more than 12 laps.
limit the number of tyres to help cut costs, but maybe give them qualifying tyres (everyone has to use the same tyres)
let them use whatever setup they like

then you have a straight shootout. fastest car gets pole. and you know it's not the fastest cos it's on low fuel or they chose the wrong tyres etc.

and for those they say the old 1hr session was boring for the first 40 minutes?, well i hardly bother watching the first couple of qualifying sessions anyway. i don't really care who qualifies in 12th position. i liked the slow buildup. it gave me time to make a sandwich and get comfortable. the commentators could run through the events of the day etc.

and to top it all off they need to rejig the points system.

ditch the old 10 points for a win.

1st - 15
2nd - 11
3rd - 9
4th - 7
5th - 5
6th - 3
7th - 2
8th - 1

fastest lap - 2
pole position - 2

let's see who's satisfied with a front row grid position now

and now there's something to race for even if you **** up your start.
want to see the race leader really trying right to the end, even if he's got a decent lead. want to see championship contenders risk it all just to get fastest lap rather than playing the percentage game, then give them something to drive for.

and if you want to see cars trade fastest lap times right to the very last lap, then scrap refuelling. that way the cars will get light and lighter as the race goes on, and hence faster and faster. also the balance of the cars will change and hence cars that were fast at the start may be less competitive later on and vice versa, encouraging a bit of overtaking later in the race.
this could potentially bring back the problem of races with no pitstops in them, but tyre rules could sort that out, so long as they couldn't last a whole race on one set. also points for fastest lap would encourage a new set late on in the race.
worried about carrying a whole raceworth of fuel in the car from the start? well the only time i have seen a fuel fire in the last 20 years in f1 has been during refuelling. so there's no safety issue.

and concerns about lack of overtaking, need to be addressed by technical changes to the cars, as suggested numerous times by others.

phew!, i seem to have written more than my intended single paragraph.
any questions?

Good morning!

I shall open proceedings with a rant. Have Steve Rider and co just discovered the word 'attrition' in the dictionary or something? STOP SAYING ATTRITION.
