Went a little mad in Meadowhall today. (one for the watch fans)

I guess it all depends on your definition of dull and your own personal circumstances. There's nothing wrong with a bit of materialism, but like most things it shouldn't be in excess.

My dad has two Breitlings, he loves them. I've no idea which ones he has. He let me borrow one when i lost my watch but i wore it for an hour and it bruised my wrist with the weight. Lovely watch.

What advantage does an Aston have over a Fiesta? Why bother getting granite worktops? Etc etc.

Some people like having nice things. Whether you consider them nice, or whether they are worth what they pay doesn't really matter.

While not much of an advantage I guess, the Aston will fall to pieces every hundred miles and cost a fortune, while the fiesta will probably still be going strong without an oil change with 200,000 miles on the clock.

I don't mean to denounce people - I'm simply curious as to why they spend what I would consider a lot of money on what I would consider a simple timepiece. I never meant any offence. :)

It seems that watch posts always bring out the most interesting views of people, for some reason they create the most amount of ire on these forums!

Like everything that people buy what you may consider to be a lot of money may not be a lot of money to other people and besides last time I read it was a free world and people are able to spend their money where they wish. Though you may consider a timepiece to be simple, I consider a car to be simple thus adjust my spending (though I still get to drive the odd super-car ;) )!

Wealth is relative to all people and finding that balance seems to be very difficult for some people to appreciate. What I pay for one taxi journey in London what might be also what I used pay my driver a month in India, should that trouble me?

I'm an ignoramus, but what type of mechanism do better watches have?

It's the mechanical movement inside the watch and its engineering that keeps the time, rather than quartz which is much easier to construct (and more accurate). You can basically get

- quartz
- mechanical manual wind
- mechanical automatic wind (wound by the inertia created when you move your wrist, e.g. ****ing off :p)

Right, because that makes sense

I can see why automatic cost more, but why is mechanical more than quartz? It's more complicated i expect? But it's still not as good at keeping time... Does it have any other advantages? Is it lighter or something?

watch fans generally see a quartz watch as a piece of electrical equipment where as a mechanical watch has been designed, engineered and built almost as a piece of art

a mechanical watch will usually outlast a quartz one and will hold value better

it's all subjective really

The reason I bought the Breitling Colt quartz was because I wanted a very accurate watch, the Breitling has a calibre/movement that is made by ETA of Switzerland, it is thermally-compensated so it maintains a very high degree of accuracy, ETA state the thermoline calibre to be +/-10 seconds per year. An automatic movement that is COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres) certified can be accurate to within +6/-4 seconds per day.
The Breitling Colt is one of a very few watches that is certified by the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres and each watch is sold with a certificate with the watches serial number marked on the certificate.
I will be checking the watches accuracy regularly with time.gov and Breitling's own time check on their website.

Are you sure, is there a reason why a quartz watch will last less time?

IMO a cheap casio will be better as a watch than any fancy brand.

Usually if you have a warranty issue with a mechanical watch they'll usually completely dismantle the movement, fix, clean it and replace bits to get it back to you. Quite often if people have warranty problems on quartz watches on expensive watches they'll just replace the movement completely (heard several stories of Breitling Aerospaces coming back with new movements).

The Breitling SuperQuartz movement depreciates a bit slower than a bog standard quartz movement as many watch people love the accuracy.
