I dont understand why he got a £250 fine for driving without insurnace yet the doctor got a £600 fine for doing 100mph in a well maintained car

The french guy didnt have the money to pay for insurance, so you can pretty much assume he played the "Im broke" card, and got a low fine payable over 1000years in installments :P

On the other hand, the doctor was probably on the higher end of the pay scale, odds are he took a good lawyer with him to court, and there's nothing a magistrate likes more than fining people who can afford to pay.

Friend of mine got £400 fine, 6 points, 2 week ban, and had to pay costs for doing 107 on a motorway in the early 90's, in a perfectly well maintained BMW 730.

Bare in mind that he was already disqualified from his previous offence plus he got another disqualification for the additional 7 points to his licence which already had 6 points.

He wasnt reported for the child though as as far as the magistrate was concerned it was a straight 101mph on the Motorway affair.
His fine was double mine... I think that put's a perspective on the lunacy.

I think you will find that magistrates don't like fining anyone. The punishments they hand out as mainly set by the government, with some leeway for individual circumstances. The "ability to pay" is one of those circumstances, but only a relatively minor one - nothing like some Scandinavian countries where fines of hundreds of thousands have been handed out to very rich people.

What would have happened had the doctor had his green light strobe on and the child had not been running around? I've seen many doctors in London on urgent call - I don't know if they've been given dispensation but they were going through redlights and so on.

They do not have exemption: only police, ambulance and fire have that - essentially anything with blue lights. However, the magistrates can dismiss the case if they feel the facts warrant it. Needless to say, loads of docs try it on.

Umm, did I miss something, or did they get his speed from the speedo in their car? To be honest, I wasn't paying that much attention, but I didn't see a calibrated speed check thingy with his recorded speed. If there was, I missed it.

Anyway, if there wasn't, then an estimated 101mph would be under 100mph true speed? Unless of course the speedo was reading higher than that.

Hmm, might check it out on iplayer.

Pretty sure police car speedos are calibrated correctly (i.e. they dont overread)

Just watching it now....good episode so far.

And my god, how hot is that girl (who had the crash and spin out on the motorway)?

I expected that doctor to get a lot more of a telling off for the kid to be honest. It wasn't like he got punished for that at all which to me is more serious that the speed he was doing.
