Spec Me a repmobile

Maybe maybe not - it's better than the Mondeos before it, it's the closest Ford have come to being a credible 3 Series rival.

It may be better than the mondeo before it but the other manufacturers have picked up their game too, certainly in the looks / image department.

Mazda 6 for example, same chassis but looks a whole lot better than the mondeo. (suppose it always did but they are closer in design this time round and the tweeks on the 6 really make a big diff)

I really hate the back of the new mondeo, except the estate which is nicer. I know you have never been a fan of vectras or vx as a whole, where as I have been more akin to them but they are really lagging compared to the new mondeo so there is a definate segregation between the 2.

Ford have definitely picked up their game with this one but looking at what’s coming out its already feeling dated.

finally a Zetec isnt equivalent to a base model passat, and would be more desirable (at a guess?)

small points, but valid. Its fords medium size car, and so will be common as muck, and depreciate.

Unfortunately VWs S trim level is HUGELY vague, and can vary. The main reason I chose Zetec is because it has alloys, electric front rear windows, which the Edge (base model) doesnt have, however the S Passat does.

I guess that yes, we will have to wait a few years to see what happens. I personally believe it wont go the way of the last mondeo as I dont think as large discounts will be available on it for atleast a couple of years. Im just trying to prove it wont suffer the same fate in depreciation as previous models.

fair point then chaps

As i say, probably too early to get a stable picture on residuals, whilst the old ones about the new one will be artificially heightened.

might be time to admit i do work for the blue oval! HOWEVER! My points are still valid and true!!!!!!!! I swearz!

EDIT - And to go along with this irony i drive a 2002 Passat!

Maybe on the forecourts etc but I doubt the actual auction prices would be...not even what glasses say.

Really is no reason for it to be any different, I would imagine the general public still see a mondeo as a rep mobile or trailer park limo. 2nd hand dealers (not main dealers they know it too but have different sales approach) know this, so they wont be paying over the odds when they start buying the 6month old / 12 month old ex fleets / hire cars at auction

i think if its that much better as people are saying, whilst the old ones on the market (as in <3year old purchase) the new one wont be accurately portrayed in used prices.

The passat and A4 (i believe, could be wrong) have been more evolutionary than revolutionary as the mondeo sounds.

my prediction will be that the mondeo will depreciate by more than the audi and VW alternatives (taking into account they probably cost more new, too)

Audi have totally moved the goalposts with the new A4, it seems a class above a mondeo or a passat, definitely 3 series territory

No they've not - it's ALWAYS been a 3 Series rival.

Maybe I should rephrase what I was trying to say, with the older model A4 I personally never really saw it comparing much to a 3 series, always seemed just a slightly more classy passat or mondeo, however the New A4 seems to be better than the 3 series from what I've read, hence finally I see it as a real competent rival. I guess I never thought of it as a rival as the A4 was a step down in terms of cost.

A4 is deffo a class above the Passat/Mondeo - literally - its a grade higher on most car schemes.

I dont see the 3 series as this all shining beacon though. Well engineered cars, but not a class leap from the (very) limited time i've spent in them. Certainly dont feel massively better than a Passat/A4/C class, and whereas i've felt the Mondeos, rightly or wrongly, are more akin to the Vectra/laguna/407.

They are not massively different to A4 or C Class, as they both reside within the same class. The Passat though? Please - it's quite noticeably lower.

so you'd take a pov spec BMW over a specced out Passat (assuming equal prices)

Bit of a pointless question becuase I'd never buy a new Passat and if I was in the position to buy a car like that, I would have alternative choices.

But anyway, a 'spec'd out Passat' would be something like a 2.0 TDI 170 Sport @ £21500. That would get a 318i, so no, I wouldnt chose the BMW. I'd have a Mondeo Titanium X.
