Seen a lovely 05/55 model, dealer to call back tomorrow morning with a part-exchange quote for my 530i M Sport Touring. I’m worried about the fuel consumption:

Urban (mpg) 13.0
Extra-urban (mpg) 27.7
Combined (mpg) 19.6

I believe that I won’t get much more than 200 miles per tank full. My wife will probably kill me if I get it. My heart says go for it but my head says no, what do you think?

If you can afford it, go for it!

Sod the fuel consumption :)

I'd be VERY wary about owning one without a decent warranty though - there's so much to go wrong.

what sort of answer do you think you'll get here?

do it!! :D

20 combined cycle isn't that bad..
you almost get 30 on the motorway ;)

i find it kinda ironic that youre worried about fuel consumption when youre thinkin about buying a 500hp car.

thing is, I would rather have a weekend car, then buy an m5.

Get an elise or something instead of trading up.

Why have a weekend car when you can have an M5 and drive it everyday...
he has a 530i which is plenty fast enough for uk roads, it's not like you can use the OMG EXTREME SPEED during a daily drive, and on weekends you can get a fun convertible that will be pretty much as fast as the m5, well that was my thinking anyway.

i'm sure fox will be along to agree with me on this

but if you have to think about fuel consumption you probably cant afford an M5.

its a whole other league in terms of running costs especially for the new model. Cant imagine how many new shape M5s your average indy gets to see.

How heavy is this M5 ?
I dont know much about bmw, but I would rather a car that goes round a bend without its tyres leaving a trench in the road.
Would a car with 250hp weighing 1 tonne be more sporty?
You would never see an M5 at the top of the track board on Top Gear, even with 500hp.
Id have one if I drove up & down the motorway everyday though :D
My opinion about big heavy cars is ok is it not?

Buy it, run it. Either you will make it work and fund it, or it wont and you'll sell it.

You only live once / Lifes too short / **** the system, anarchy rules etc

Simple physics means an Elise corners better than an M5.
Considering the speed limits on todays roads then being able do 180mph is a mute point.

Obviously an M5 is more comfy/practical for everyday use & if I had a choice Id have an M5 & an Elise ;)
Or if I could only have 1 car Id not have an M5.

.

correct

but frankly, the list of cars that corner better than an M5 < the list that cant.

The m5 is an extraordinary piece of engineering. It should be a big heavy barge that cant corner. But its not. Look at that vid i posted, the Corner speeds were similar to that of a GT3.

Not saying its quicker than a GT3, but to come so close given its weight, is amazing.

If you can afford the costs of running, or can have them covered by warranty... whya re you still here and not there getting it sorted!

Am I being stupid this afternoon, but a 530i M Sport Touring isnt an M5 well not the proper one anyway. Also are there really so much to go wrong as I have been looking at them lately.
