I think its a fantastic idea, for the main reason being that you will own an M car. I'm looking at 330ci's, but in the back of my mind i would always want an M3, but nowhere near close to getting one (I'd want a brand spanking new one). Do you get what I mean? As said previously, buy it, love it, if you hate it, sell it. The difference in fuel economy is gonna be what? A few quid? Whats that when you drive AN EMM PHIIVVEEEE!!!

Quoted for the truth. If fuel economy even enters the decision when buying something like the M5 it's not the right car for you.

Nobody knows how big the repair bills are yet becuase the early ones have only just come out of warranty but the V10 is hugely complicated and controlled by hugely complicated electronics which none of the specialists have ever seen or worked on yet, so repair bills are not going to be small.

Running costs - tyres are £800+ a set, fuel consumption is sub 20mpg, a servicicing is between £200 and £1000 every 15k miles or so, etc. Tom0 has one so will be able to offer more of an insight.

It's a saloon car that will keep up with a Ferrari 360 - it's not going to be nice on the wallet

They are very awesome but only for people with very deep pockets. For the rest of us a 530i Sport looks the same but costs a fraction to run. And who needs an extra 250bhp

Trust me on our roads, the extra bhp is pointless, when can you use it? its so frustrating driving my mildly hothatch (a mere 250 ponies) got know what it would be like to 'drive' a 510bhp monster like the M5.

i get 9-10mpg around town and around 18-20mpg on the motorway.

cruise set to 70mph is about 22-23mpg. i normally get around 200 miles of mostly around town driving out of £60-£70 petrol fill up ( super).

havent had any repair costs but tyres are £800 -£1000 for a set and if you drive it like its supposed to be then the rears wont last long at all.

i have had the brake pads changed and parts alone for a full set were over £350.

to say you cant use the power everyday isnt true. its not like you have to try and do 200 mph everywhere, its just being able to pull away from 20mph in 4th effortlessy etc.

Guys, thanks for your comments. Common sense prevails, given that most of my driving will be around town, I can’t justify the M5 and the 530i M Sport Touring stays. The head rules the heart!
