Whatever way you look at it if you choose not to fight you are civilian and its poor form and against international law (not that every country on the planet breaks international law regularly including us) but civilians should not be intentionally killed. And I think the term you are looking for is not world war but total war where civilian populus are targeted as part of a countries infrastructure and ability to wage war.

Those civilians are the ones who are building the weapons, farming the food for the soldiers. I can't see how you can class them as civilians in a world war. Totally different in smaller conflicts.

Not saying it's right to carpet bomb citys. But there not exactly civilians.

You did not read the whole post did you, you have to seperate out essential war effort workers as collateral damage but they cannot be defined as legitimate targets there is a difference.

I suppose I would have been better off in asking whether there would be anything valuable about collecting it or whatever other reasons there could be for it? Honestly I am intrigued as to what particular benefit could be gained from it.

Lots of peolpe have interests in losts of different things. Personally I find model railways a complete mystery but it doesn't stop many thousands enjoying them. There has always been an interest in the macabre side of human nature so people can find things interesting while not at all agreeing with the ideas behind them. So they collect items that are to do with the subject.

International law doesn't really exist unless there is the will by the major players to enforce it.

In an almost global conflict such as the second world war I am not sure it is as bad a crime. Much the same as the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In a war such as that the aim is to reduce the capability for the nation to fight back as quickly as possible. In the long run that saves many more lives. It isn't nice, but then the realities of war aren't nice.

To be honest I don't think hero worship really plays a large part and even if it does it should never be illegal. Much like being a racist should never be illegal. We really don't want to go along the route of thought crimes.

They endorse it for their own ends as with everything in politics it has its uses. If it were enforced there would a trial or ten every week. The law dose exist its just convienently ignored, I was not saying the laws are followed just that they do exist. And as for Heroshima and Nagasaki, I think the desired effect could have been created by just dropping one in Tokyo bay and saying to the Japs watch this the next one is on your head.

So WW2 was a world war, and no war crimes existed as you say, why were there trials and executions of war criminals if no war crime can be commited in a world war. And it dose not take a whole country of people of all ages to make an effort for war.

In the case of a global conflict it can if it hastens the end of the war. It was certainly seen as a legitimate tactic in World War 2.
