The Dissertation/FYP thread 2008

Had 2 copies of mine bound on Thursday. £8.50 and it looks pretty smart :)

During the periods I spent hammering my project, I set myself a target of 500 words a day to make myself feel like the day had been worthwhile, anymore was a bonus. Ended up with 35000 words (20k report + 15k appendices).

Interesting point about the PGCE above though, i'll be starting a PGCE in September, whats your opinion of the work load compared to a final year of a degree?

Erm, well my PGCE course was uniquely heavy on the paperwork. To be honest, It was a very different lifestyle and had different demands. Both years were stressful, but in their own way.
Lots riding on final year of uni, but you had time to take a break etc. During PGCE, you have deadlines every hour :p ;). Placement meant working till very late in the evening either writing up reflections on lessons from that day, or planning lessons for the next :(.

Was good fun when the work load was low though... To be honest a lot will depend on where you are doing it and what schools you have placements in. The staff in each of those cases will either help you out a ton, or **** you off a treat! I was so lucky in my first placement that my Principle Subject Tutor was awesome, and now I'm working there with him as my head of department :D :D

<end hijack!!>

Wow, sounds like a really impressive application. I imagine it would have a lot of potential uses in logistics and transport management. How's your report progressing? Mine is due for the 23rd, hoping to get it done for next Friday.

Let's hope :). My report is due on the 29th and I have to demo it on the 30th talk about not wasting any time. I'm currently up to 25,000 words (without appendixes) and still have the actual software development section to write :o.

How's everyone else's going?

Well, here it is. My project is printed and ready to be bound tomorrow. Theres 2 copies here, but their still 130 pages each!

Good few trees worth, dontcha think?

bumppppp.

Just writing my work up now and Iv decided i want to use the [1] [2] reference format, is there a way I can make word automatically make the reference section after each section so i can easily just paste the things in?? I hate using word etc tbh.

Mine's at about 19000 still with a few sections to finish off. Taking some time to do the other two essays they were crazy enough to give us over the Easter break too! :(

Mine is in for tomorrow 14:00, 8000 words max.

I am presently on 8200 and I have yet to complete my recommendations, references and abstract.

Should I leave it at around 8500-8700 or should I cut it down to around 8100?

Is 8000 the max for the whole thing or just the main stuff? I.e. can you put stuff in references and appendices that don't count towards the word count?

Taken from the guidance notes:

A main account of up to about 7000 words (but no more that 8,000). The content of the main account will depend upon the nature of the project, but unless clearly not necessary it should include the main chapter headings and, as applicable, section headings shown in the list below.

Section headings start from 1.0 and finish at 10.

7 recommendations
8 references
9 bibliography
10 appendices

Does that mean it will include them all?

lol, the whole things a bloody mess. squashed up, pictures out of alignment, some things in the wrong sections...

I have just removed loads of stuff out to the appendix and added text boxes for some words that does not count in the word count for mine, hehe.

My dissertation was 2 library projects 1st on PKB and its role in cancer/apoptosis, the second was "Evaluating the use of denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) for the determination of sulphate reducing bacteria community composition in natural and anthropogenic environments"
Where / what do you study? :)
