I read in the newspaper yesterday that BBC and ITV are launching a HD freesat service this month.

Great news as all you need is HD receiver which is around £150 and doesn't need a subscription.

I'm sure 4 and 5 will launch HD channels too.

Who's looking forward to the world cup in HD?

So you'll need another box on top of the Sky one?

Why can't they just launch some HD channels on the existing sat network ?

the channels should work (be freely receivable) on a Sky HD box I would have thought

but £150 is ok for people with HDtvs who want HD programmes without subscriptions to sky

tbh i'm not sure which satellite these channels are going to be carried on, but blurb on that website states that you not have to move your current sky dish so they must be on Astra

We just use the Freeview channels via the old Skybox we have and I noticed yesterday there are these HD channels.

Just another excuse to spend £££'s tbh.

Except you cant receive HD through an old sky box, unless it is a SkyHD box. Whereas i believe you can connect a freesat hd box to an old or existing sky dish and received the fta channels (including hd).

its a good idea, whats the point of HD tvs with HD content

obviously the price will come down, because digiboxes used to be £100 and now they can be had for £25

I have this image of Illegal Immigrants with their satellite dishes taped to a supermarket trolley in the back garden trying to tune into it.

well some of the newest sony(including mine) and panasonics have the tuners already in the tvs but will still need a freesat dish or from what i read a while ago your sky dish could be utilised

i don't think so..

ive just looked at the manual for your tv

there's no where to connect a satellite dish, only a terrestrial areial

Hmm you could be right but according to what hifi mag the 40w3000 has the tuner for free sat and from i could make out the 40d3000,40v3000 and the 40w3000 all use the same tuners.
Guess time will tell when freesat arrives.......

I just had a thought, won't this be a waste of money next year. when terrestrial gets turned of. Unless you live in an area with exceptional bad reception.

no because

freesat uses a satellite which isn't being turned off

a hdtv can't decode hd transmission without a decoder. hdtv uses a different codec

hd channels aren't being introduced to digital terrestrial until 2010 and you will still need a new decoder
