All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

Nunez - Crap
Josemi - Crap
Pellegrino - No comment
Morientes - Disagree. Came to Liverpool with a fantastic goalscoring record at Madrid and Monaco but never settled. Can't blame Rafa for that, he did his job by buying a proven goalscorer.
Zenden - Crap
Kromkamp - Needed a right back and couldn't afford anyone else so swapped him for Josemi.
Bellamy - Agree. Did well in spells but ultimately a poor signing given his mentality.
Palletta - Crap
Gonzalez - Disagree. Fantastic player in Spain and showed a lot of promise for us but unlucky injuries ruined his time here.
Aurelio - Agree. Excellent fullback when fit and a country mile ahead of Riise in terms of ability but Rafa knew he was injury prone and shouldn't have gone near him.
Pennant - Plays well enough when confident but was only bought because we needed a right winger and lost out on other targets. Blame the board for him not Rafa.
Voronin - No comment.
Kuyt - Disagree for the same reason I gave for Morientes. Proven goalscorer in Holland but hasn't worked out for him in front of goal.

As for not signing decent players when he's spent big money he's usually been rewarded, Morientes and Kuyt being the only exceptions.

Breaking on SSN that AC Milan have claimed to have signed Flamini on a 4 year deal. Silly Arsenal for not paying him what he wanted and silly Flamini for joining that bunch of old men.

He wanted £6m a year AFTER tax, he's not worth that, and how many other members of the squad would want that salary.

Good player, but we were prepared to get rid of him last summer.

Hmm my maths skill say including tax that would be 10 mil and per week it is just under 200k. That can't be right surely?

Possibly thats why he's giving him minutes this season. He played in the ACoN there, and he certainly runs with the ball out of defence well.

He has definately looked a different player in the last couple of games but i'd be a bit loathe to rely on him. Even if he did have a stormer next season we have no DM's to cover him.

No chance of that (£6m) being right. He may have wanted ~£70k which when you consider the cost of buying a ready made replacement, was worth it.

But if they paid Flamini what he wanted, and could get from other teams due to his strong bargaining postion, then other players in the squad would complain they weren't getting paid enough.... it would destroy the wage structure so Arsenal would have to pay far more out per week than the x amount more Flamini wanted.

But if you stick to this structure then you risk losing your best players.

I dunno who you support but after that I'm guessing it's Liverpool and to be perfectly frank there's no way that everyone on the above list can be considered anything other than rubbish signings. You argue that the likes of Kuyt came with a reputation of scoring goals in another league but that's a totally irrelevant point as A- as proved by Kezmen being a goalscorer in Holland does not mean anything when it comes to the Premiership and B- it's Rafa's job to be able to ascertain whether or not Kuyt had the ability to transfer his form in Holland to the Premiership and if he thought he could he's been proved wrong so whichever way you dress it up Kuyt has not been a good signing.....well not as the 20 goal a season striker you wanted anyway.

You also argue that Gonzalez was fantastic in spain (FYI not sure about that anyway) but injuries caused him to be a flop well Kleberson came to Old Trafford looking great in a Brazil team that won the world cup and also had a lot of injuries in his first season with us but ultimately has been looked at (and rightly so) a crap signing by us. That's without actually pointing out that when he did play Gonzalez looked anything but a fantastic player nearer to the truth is he was bloody awful.

Visionary is spot on about Rafa's transfer activity whilst at Liverpool has been very poor

alan shearer to take the reigns at hartlepool united, shearers blue & white army, you heard it here first.

I really hope that does happen, Shearer needs to work his way up from the bottom rather than being thrown in at the deep end at a Premiership club. Plus, it will be nice to have a second team to support. :p

Only 1 player on that list cost more than £7m and only 4 cost more than £2m. When you're paying £2m for players for a top 4 side what do you expect?

With the exception of Kuyt and Morientes, every player Rafa has spent half decent money on has been successful or in the case of Bellamy came in done a job and sold at a profit.

Arsenal are dumb. dumb dumb dumb. their board is always going on about how much money they're making which is fair enough but they really don't seem to like spending it on wages or fee's, they really need to have a rethink if they want to be able to compete in the future.
