How loud is your PS3?

I was surprised at how quiet my PS3 is (40gb version). I hate noise in the background and have spent a lot of time and effort getting my PC almost silent. I even built a custom hdd bay that allowed me to bungie mod my hdds inside soundproof enclosures, so its pretty dam quiet ;).

I was worried the PS3 would be too loud after hearing my brothers 360 but its not bad at all. Its not as quiet as my PC but it is very quiet and allows me to watch films etc without having to turn the volume right up.

The fans speed up ever so slightly after its been on for like 8 hours straight but its still very quiet even then. I was really impressed considering whats crammed into such a small space.

My housemate's is quite erratic, normally fairly quiet but when we were playing some Resistance co-op last night it was louder than my 360!

mm im sure i must have the strange ps3 because my fans kick in after half hour of doing any thing or nothing and it has plenty of breathing room, kicks out some mighty heat aswell.

ps i use it to dry my hair sometimes :P

I hate to bring up an old thread but has anyone noticed their PS3 get louder when it spins up a disc ? it gets noticeably louder when I move over the entry for a game in the drive and will calm down again several minutes after I move off it. Don't remember it doing this when I first got it / I'm going mad ?

edit: Its not loud, loud, just seems a bit weird, I'm pretty sure it didn't do this when I first got it.

My ps3 is actually louder than my original 360, but a fair bit quieter than my new one, not sure whether it's the difference in the drives or what really.

Doesn't really bother me since you can't hear either of them over the sound system.

ps3 makes a noise?

not with a hdtv, laptop, skybox in the same room its quiet as a moose.

ive got 2 games on this un (not counting tekken) GTA and GT5P and already im down to 20 gig left. Guess ill be upgrading the hdd asap

Not that old, only 2 days :p.
Yes, it gets louder when it spins up a disc, it's because it's spinning up a disc. :p

If I have to go back a few pages it feels old :p

Just don't remember it doing this before, used to be like PS2 drive, could only hear the vee-voop before it reads and nothing else, meh, I should probably chalk this one up to my noise paranoia.....
