***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

Is there any eta or any rough idea on the 901 pricing?

I'm very tempted to get an EEE but I may wait to see how the 901 shapes up :)

I love my 701, even if i waited till now id still choose the 701 over the others imo.

Running XP and its 100% smooth.

Gonna reinstall XP tomorrow though, and try get Football Manager 2008 on here (dunno how well that will run :p).

I have an asus 900 eee PC. There is a new BIOS out for it v0501.

The update contains "Updated panel PWM frequency"

Does anyone know what this chages? After hours of searching all I can find is that the new BIOS removes the CPU options (Performance/Power save)

Currently in the BIOS when the option "Performance" is set the CPU runs at 900Mhz and at 630Mhz in "powerssave mode". With the 4400 battery I get only abount 1hr of use in "performace" and about 2hrs45 in "power Save"

Got FM2008 working smoothly on my Eee, along with 1024x768 / 1280x1024 :). Next thing to do is the touchscreen mod and possibly BT or something like that :).

The Bios seems to fix a noise issue with the display

"I can also confirm having just upgraded to the new bios that the screen whine has most definitely gone. They've fixed it! Its lovely. It was never that loud, but in a quiet room at night I found it irksome. This is the best reason to upgrade in my eye"

However I am still looking into the posts stating that the option to set the laptop into "Power Saving mode" i.e 630 Mhz has been removed.

Don't worry about the issue with the power saving mode, download eeectl and you can set speed profiles from windows and backlight settings too.

I have been looking at eeectl v0.2.3 and it seems to destabilise my system. I run XP with Sp3 maybe this is what causes it.

On the stock BIOS set on "Performance" the system seems fine, when I drop the core speed using eeectl it does and you can see this using CPUz. i.e to 630mhz

However web browsing becomes painfully slow, so slow it is unusable.

However if I set the BIOS to "power save" the system runs again at 630Mhz and browsing is fine

Anyone used eeectl with XP SP3?

I will do some more testing.

After looking at these for ages. Think im going to get the wind. Its cheaper, has the atom, larger keys, bluetooth, 10" screen, plus the battery life is supposed to be 7hrs!!!!!!!!!!!

Just had a reponce to the support query raised regarding the 4400 battery that we get in the uk with the 900 model. It may be worth you while to drop them a silimar line also if you have a 4400 battery.

My query:

I would like to log my dissatisfaction with the specification of the battery which the UK has received over other global territories. The unit I have only has a 4400Mha battery where as other territories are receiving 5800Mha.

With the increase in specification over the 701 the product does need the higher capacity battery. I cannot understand why the 900 has a lower specification battery over the 701 and the 900 model in other territories.

At the moment I feel that the unit is not acceptable, as in order to get any type of battery life out of the lower capacity battery I have to run the unit in all sorts of power saving modes which defeats the object of having a a laptop of that specification.

I have also read that HK users who were provided with ther 4400mha batteries are reciving replacement 5800 batteries, is this going to happen in the UK?

Response from Asus:

Dear customer,

Currently Asus UK is reviewing the battery issue.

Kind regards,
Asus Support Team

lol they dont exactly offer you a solution. I aint buying one, will go msi wind; apparently 7hrs battery, if that translates to 4.5 hrs of real world use ill be happy.

Any idea how much an 8.9 inch msi wind will cost?

The 10" XP version is on another site £350, so I presume less.

I was reading one review last night that said the XP version is worth the extra as it has a better battery and more ram for only £30 more.

So im gonna buy the XP version and shove ubuntu or maybe arch if I have time.

FYI, you can buy a 7800mAh battery made by a company called Mugen and it supposedly lasts 6 hours.

Also, I think the defining factor of the EEE is the massive community that surrounds it. There are mods for literally everything you could ever want to do. I almost think its good that the HDD space is limited, as it really makes the geeksquad push the boundaries of what you can do with limited space.
