Age of Conan

Every time I read about all the spawn-camping or people being attacked while they're fighting mobs or in coversation with NPCs it's like I'm reading about a different game, cause none of that's ever happened to me! Perhaps my fearsome reputation precedes me and people just stealth and run away when they hear my booming footsteps approach... or maybe it's because I'm on an RP-PvP server where there's simply fewer annoying kids! :p
I've been playing since early access and so far I've only been attacked while low on health after fighting a mob once - by someone who was annoyed cause I stole his quest boss (in fact the boss detected and attacked me while I was walking past in stealth, but the guy genuinely thought that I had stolen his spawn - though it was still low to attack me when I had like 10% HP left I thought).
I've also been attacked without reason twice. The first was back in Tortage, I zone into the Underhalls and get knocked down, I get up and start fighting back. I don't know if the guy was camping the doorway or not, but I went after him and killed him after I rezzed and we spent the next 45' stalking each other while doing our quests in the area.
The second time was last night, I got attacked by a mob that was too much for me, was running away when a Herald of Xotli attacked the mob and stole aggro from me. I got my breath back, went back to full health, and then went back and helped to kill him. When the mob died, I was typing "hey thanks for the help man", I look up at the screen and the guy had already killed me. I res, message him with "you only got me cause I was typing you know...", he replies with "I suppose now you'll be coming back for me :)". I pretended I wasn't, but to my surprise he was still there waiting when I got back, so I jumped out of stealth and two-shotted him :p He came back after he respawned and we spent the next 40' killing each other, it was great fun tbh and the kind you can only get in ffa pvp. He later said that he didn't intend to attack me, but he had prepped his killer combo when the mob died, I was standing in front of him, and he thought "what the ****? I spent the stamina, let's use it!" :D
It's true that you can get enough pvp on the pve servers as well though, after all the minigames are only a popup menu away, and I'm sure they'll implement drunken brawling before the summer's out. I went on the server I did mainly because you get fewer people with annoying names on RP servers tbh. FFA PvP is proving to be a more pleasant diversion than I expected, but I only get up to it once every few days, most of the time people don't bother each other while questing.

For those plagued by spawn-campers and the like, check out this interview, and if you can stop yourself from laughing at the news show-style set, you'll hear Jason Stone saying there's a prison system coming: http://www.g4tv.com/mmoreport/videos/26003/The_MMO_Report_Age_of_Conan_Special.html

Any chance anyone can do a (stickyable?) patch notes thread, as its obv quite a few people (myself included) can't get onto the AoC forums, but I'd still like to be able to see the changes they make in the patches.

I had that problem too, but with Firefox I can log into them fine.

Who else knocked shadows down to "Characters Only" as having shadows on every thing destroyed the FPS >.<

Don't shadows play apart in the Stealth vs. Perception tests? So I heard anyway, not sure if it's been implemented... If you play any kind of rogue class it's probably better if you leave shadows on, though you can drop their quality.

<ColiN> - aka Faceripper, the necromancer who only had one pet till lvl 10!!! and ran away from a frozen wrath mob for 30 secs before seeing it was his pet lol!
ROFL!

I have to say, having recently hit level 39 and completed my first major group dungeon, I'm still thoroughly enjoying myself. Next level I get to equip my Rhino, my quest cloak, a new weapon I picked up and at 41 I get my UBER breastplate I got in Sanctum (off the final boss).

The group stuff is TOUGH and the mobs take forever to kill, even with multiple characters wailing on them. We only had one wipe though and everyone made a boatload of exp and completed tons of quests - the zone was Sanctum in the Wild Lands......and there was some amazing loot as well. There was weapons, armour, jewellry, the lot - and it was all amazing. One of our higher levels went in there solo (possible after 48 as you can just walkaround without aggro) and takes out the bosses......and he, on three runs, hadn't seen any of the items I lotto'd in the group, so the loot tables must be pretty big and varied. I'm definitely going back in there.

Oh, and if you're a Conqueror and the Guardian dies, remember to change your stance from Frenzy to Defence as soon as possible....it's pretty nasty otherwise :D

One of the things that is bugging me a bit on the PvP servers is the fact that Mob names and player character names are both red. It's caused me to attack players by accident thinking they were mobs, I was in the underhalls and nearly beat some poor lvl 7 to death with my guardian before realising it was a player.

I stopped attacking and tried apologising but the poor guy just kept on fighting me anyway, I had to run away in the end because I didn't want to kill him. He must have thought he was well hard chasing off a lvl20 guardian ;)

Haha cheers that made me laugh:D

I've spent a few hours reading up but I'm not really any more the wiser.

Can someone summarise the classes and such for me? I know the basics, but some played experiences would be good.

Hmm - can one download the game client from anywhere, or do I need to wait to get a copy of the DVDs so that I can enter a cd-key?

Early Access download client is probably offline, just gonna have to wait, need CD key to login anyhoo.

Best bet is to play a mage character and a rogue character to level 10 to get the feel for magic and melee, see which you like, then if you'd like healing go priest or want more armour, go solider.

Quick class summary for Platypus:

Soldier classes (tanks):
Guardian: heaviest armour, 1-handed weapon+shield, or polearm (2-handed, AoE damage), knockback resists, stun resists
Conqueror: heavy armour, 1-handed weapons or dual-wielding, or 2-handed swords, AoE "auras" that give buffs to the party.
Dark Templar: tanks with spells! (life-leaching and enemy debuffs)

Rogues (DPS, stealthy, light armour):
Ranger: self-explanatory, stand well away and snipe till they're dead. can use FPS perspective, they also have melee capability but many great combos apparently
Assasins: self-explanatory, jump out from hiding and wail on them till they're dead. have poison and a few debuffs I think.
Barbarians: like a bigger, scarier assasin - does slightly less damage but can take more punishment, also has knockdowns and stuns and can wield 2-handed weapons (AoE effect)

Priests:
Priest of Mitra: healing, direct damage that gets stronger the more you heal, crowd control (knockbacks)
Tempest of Set: AoE lightning nukes, a few debuffs, healing that gets stronger the more you nuke
Bear Shaman: hard in-your-face priest, group buffs, healing that gets stronger the more you whack things in the face. Has melee combos like the soldiers and rogues

Mages:
Necromancer: self-explanatory, damage-over-time spells, a few debuffs and a little crowd control (fear and stuff), undead pets. Lich form, don't know what that does, prob more hitpoints.
Demonologist: AoE nukes, and a snare or two. Demonic pets, don't think they do much damage from what I've seen, though they have different kinds, maybe the ones I encountered so far are the ones that give the demonologist extra HP or mana rather than the kind that is there to inflict damage.
Herald of Xotli: like a melee-demonologist, wields 2-handed swords, has melee combos like soldiers and rogues, demonic self-buffs including a demon-form that looks like the Predator, not that many spellls (though there's a cool pbaoe nuke that sets peopel on fire and does dot).

Basically the spellcasting classes are pretty much what you're used to from other MMOs (except for AoE or cone-effect spells, which have to be aimed). The melee system with the combos plays like a combination of a rhytm-action game and a hack'n'slash game (though more Severance than Devil May Cry, or possibly those EA Lord of the Rings hack'n'slash games). The fatality animations are incredibly gory and empowering, they just never get old (check youtube if you don't believe me), especially if you get them on a player, and even if you prefer playing spellcasters you HAVE to make a melee alt just to try out the combat system - it doesn't have the fluidity of a single-player hack'n'slash but it's still a heck of a lot of fun!

good summary of the classes, every server is lacking guardians ( any soldier class realy ) but full of healers which is nice.

Not if you always roll a healer to find groups!! :) For once, the healers aren't gimped for solo play. My bear shaman easily kills multiple mobs above her level and I've heard good things about the other two.

I thought Dark Templars were popular?

See a few dozen posts back, the game's zones are persistent, but it makes additional instances of them when they get too crowded. So not like Guild Wars, cause the zones there exist in closed instances (ie. they're only there for you and your party), whereas these are open instances with other players coming and going at will. Chat and /say messages are broadcast throughout all instances and you can switch between them through a simple drop-down menu for grouping. So it's more like the towns in GW rather than the explorables.

Ah ok, so I could be standing in a certain place chatting to someone else who is in the same place but in another instance of it so I couldn't actually see him/her?

By the way anyone else noticed how odd the video options are atm? ie for example I might get around 45 - 80 fps with shadows on and around 30 - 55 with them off!

Usually though most people avoid playing PvP because of the idiots and kids (usually a combination of both) that plague PvP servers

Really wanted to create my main char on a pvp server but was put off by exactly that reason:(might create one and see how it goes, thanks for clearing the carebear thing, still trying to translate the MMO terminology, think i would have it after a year on LOTRO:rolleyes:

First city, you got day time where you can group or solo and night time where you solo (you have the zone to your self)i finished the first part at lvl 19/20 with my neccy and 21 with my pom( priest),then you go on a boat trip and it as normal solo or group but some zones are instants so they locked for you or your group.

You cannot do the last part of the starter city until your 19 i think as i tried at 18 and was told i wasn't strong enough.
