20,000 RPM raptors on their way

HOw do you do that? these raptors are doing my nut in crunching away on the desk

i've dumped my raptors and gone to the WD640's for that very reason.

very silent in seek and just as snappy on the desktop, i don't miss my raptors or the noise.

this box has 2x640 boot drives and 8x1tb RE GP for storage and all of them combined are loads quieter than a single raptor.

back on topic ..20k raptors meh SSD are the future.

I love my crunchy nut raptor, louder the better tbh! i'm probably in the minority here...in fact i'm probably just on my own:p

Sweeeeeeet!!!!!! Wonder how fast they will be

around 20k RPM

I'll get my coat shall I?

Aren't they flogging a dead horse a bit here? SSD is going to be the way forward, so why plow money into making the old gen quicker?

Im quite happy to pay it. Access times are lower, and transfer speeds are nothing to be sniffed at either. I dont use any more than 120Gb on my System drive, so its money well spent. I have raptors myself and much prefer the speed. If the F1's were as fast, of course id get them. Who wouldnt.

Got to laugh at all the haters (as usual in Raptor threads), esp as Topic is Raptors not SSD's

He wanted a fast HDD, so bought a new VelociRaptor with high MB/Sec and very Low Seek.

He possibly did not want to Raid0 with 2 slower HDD's which have a high seek and even higher in Raid0 and might not need 600-1000GB of space on PC at any one time for Pron.

You all are dreaming if you think your going to AFFORD very fast SSD's in a good Capacity anytime soon, 1stly they aint even invented, 2ndly they will cost a fortune at release.

IMO, it will be 2010 before you get what you want at a good price.

My velociRaptor is way more quiet than my old 74GB Raptors. Can hardly hear the new VelociRaptor in a quiet room sitting by the PC. It's also considerably more fast than my old Raptors.

I would still prefer a SSD though, but it would need 120MBps+ read and write speeds to make it a worthwhile upgrade from what i have now. Even the very fastest SSD's are around 110MBps, and my VelociRaptor is 107MBps.

It's nice to see HDD's getting competition, because they could really do with a speed boost.

The fastest SSD's now are 120MB/Sec READ and 100MB/Sec WRITE, they are like 64GB and cost £££££££££££££££££.

Im glad you like your new HDD. :)

128GB. ;)

I can imagine these drives sounding like a jet taking off. At least it would actually improve loading times though due to the lower seek times, unlike raid.

I really like that, i'm considering a new harddrive and i could very well get a Velociraptor but noise has suddenly become a huge annoyance for me, really noticing lately how much noise my rig is making and because of the many hours each day i spend here, that is simply not acceptable. Do you have any way to compare it, of course in your own opinion, to a drive like the 7200.10 from Seagate? I would hugely appreciate that :)

Well comepared to the 74GB Raptors the VelociRaptor is about 1/4 of the noise, or less. Compared to my 1TB Segate HDD's it's about 1/3 the noise. Infact it's one of the most quiet hard drives i've ever used, and i build and sell computers so go through a load of HDD's! I'm positive that if you was to get one the noise would not be a problem.

15K server drives are loud, what will these be like? deafening

they'll be surprisingly quiet compared to server drives probably, server drives arent designed to be silent as its not a concern in most servers, at least that seems the case with SCSI drives

the fans in our server room are far louder than any hard drive

slackworth, ask them about a 15k and 20krpm raptor and say you saw this article. I'd love a 20krpm raptor! If they can get 4ms access times and 140mb/sec avg it would be the king of kings, currently the velociraptor will be killed my 2 * samsung 640gb drives in raid0 except for seek times of course but a 20krpm drive would be about the same speed hopefully as 2 raided non-raptor drives. It may actually be worth a £190+ price tag for a change.

15K RPM drives are on the roadmap but not till the end of 2009-2010 so the 20K RPM drives are going to be a mile away and the price will be far greater than £190.

Ahh well at least comments about SSD's being faster and cheaper will actually be true by the time 20K rpm HDD's hit. :( (who is going to make Mechanical HDD's in 2011+ ?).

I think thats a waste of time by then TBH, if they could get a 15K rpm out in next 6months that would be better.

but then no one would want to buy the velociraptors. i know i wouldnt. seems the SSD reality is dawning on the big boys. seagate have announced their plans, but nothing from WD afaik. mechanical drives wont compete at all, even on cost at some point. the only advantage in the short term is raw storage space.

any chance of WD going under, or bought by seagate if they dont get a portion of the SSD market?

I've just fitted my Velociraptor and can confirm that it is one quiet drive !
I am watercooled, but this drive has not added to the noise envelope at all.
Very happy, compared to the Raptor 74/150gb series.
Setup is now 1 x Velociraptor 1 x Samsung F1 1TB.
