Some other quick performance gains in percentage from the article:

Nehalem is just over 40% faster than Penryn, clock for clock, in 3dsmax.

Encoding performance here went through the roof with Nehalem: a clock for clock boost of 44%. (with AutoMKV encoder)

Memory bandwidth is obviously greater with three DDR3 channels, Everest measured around a 70% increase in read bandwidth

While the 2.66GHz Core 2 Quad Q9450 (Penryn) takes another 127 seconds to execute twice the workload, the 2.66GHz Nehalem only needs another 49 seconds. And if you're curious, this quad-core Nehalem running at 2.66GHz is within 20% of the performance of an eight-core 3.2GHz Skulltrail system. Equalize clock speed and we'd bet that a quad-core Nehalem would be the same speed as an 8-core Skulltrail here.

In our testing we found that Phenom's L3 cache takes a similar 43 cycles to access but at much lower clock speeds (2.0GHz). If we put these numbers into relative terms it takes 21.5 ns to get a request back from Phenom's L3 vs. 14.6 ns with Nehalem's - that's nearly 50% longer in Phenom.

Finally POV-Ray echoes what we've seen elsewhere, with a 36% performance improvement over the 2.66GHz Core 2 Q9450

Well if a overclocked Q6600 just beats a 2.66ghz Nehalem then the overclocked Nehalem will get another 40-50% increase by overclocking

so basically, i will buy the best bang for buck cpu and clock it. Like many others will do, now that it seems we will be able to clock em. That is, if there aint any problems overclocking like ive had with every single cpu/mem

Well they look so awesome that most current hardware hardly seems worth it.
And plus... holding off till then will make the sugar sweeter for a larger difference in performance

Indeed, it also opens up for some quite cool options 3 x 2GB sticks for instance, a whole lot of new possibilites in the way that modules can be combined. And of course 4GB DDR3 sticks will probably be dirt cheap by then.

This chip is looking good but we need software to really start taking advantgage of multi cores. Duelcore chips are the norm now so it should happen.

Will be getting one and then one again whent he octo 32nm bad boys come out. As for AMD, well I feel a little sorry for em. Even when they were making better CPUs than Intel for cheaper, Intel managed to hold on to almost all of the market share and when Intel got back on top they got it back.

Luckily for us Intel seem to be trying to stick to moores law so it doesn't affect CPU progress much but they are dodgy as ****. Loosing monopoly lawsuits all over the place.

I hope nVidia and VIA kick their ass but it is wishful thinking, the way it is going intel will soon be making almost the entire computer.

CPU/GPU/Mobo with wifi, sound, ethernet etc, and soon SSHDs. What the **** is left other than RAM!

Well the FTC are now ivestigating Intel.

And also lately Intel were fined $25M in a South Korean antitrust case.

The AMD case against Intel has been postponed until 2010 though.

I dont really like Intel, but then pretty much all massive companies suck anus really... but i do love there CPU's. Will definitely get a Nehalem.
As for AMD i dont feel that sorry for them, the people who run the company have made some really stupid decisions lately. Top employees are leaving them like a sinking ship.

Intel might be ahead of AMD but certainly arent years ahead of ALL THE OTHER CHIP MANUFACTURERS, ARM are YEARS ahead of intel on performance per watt, and IBM Power Architecture is far more powerful...

Intel until recently anyway were a bit lethargic. I remember when the Dec Alpha was the performance processor for NT, unfortunately this CPU is no more... I wonder how fast Windows would now be if development of that architecture had continued... from a technical view Intel is nothing special - their just big!

Intel have the best fabs - it's an expensive business - but there's not substitute for good efficient design - I wouldn't right off AMD just yet!

And Alpha being the chip of choice back in the NT days... I dunno... I wouldn't want to be using an Alpha chip that costs about 6 times more than a mainstream CPU. And even then it was around the time when clockspeed actually meant a whole lot. Obviously a 500mhz chip would have beaten a 66mhz chip, don't you think??

I completely disagree with your statement that Intel's chip lack in technical aspects.

You woudn't write off AMD just yet... But this implies that you would write them off sooner or later?

I dont' know... This Nehalem looks real bad for AMD. I will just venture out and wildly guess that Intel will lose the FTC case, end up having to pay AMD a few billion dollars, and have AMD try to survive off that for a couple more years, until they try to come up with something, hopefully with their products this time around.

Just looks like AMD is being a little cry-girl. I just don't get it. Clearly for the past two years Intel was the choice... I don't know why AMD is b*tching about that.
