BMW 330CI

you seem to be quoting figures and performance for a 204bhp 330Cd.....the i is much quicker as fox pointed out. It will have no problem keeping up with and probably pulling ahead of any of the hatches you mentioned (especially the **** poor golf ed30)

Really? what that mondy of yours putting out now, didnt think you could get the v6 much beyond 200 BHP without mega bucks being spent.

Iirc the ED30 is 225bhp?

Is the build quality of the interior of the above mentioned cars anywhere near as good as a E46 like the 330i ?

At an educated guess I predict "no".

Build quality first and performance 2nd IMO but then to call a 330i slow just because a remapped Golf or whatever can beat it is just plain silly not to mention E46 coupe = best looking coupe ever!

Just spend £200 remapping the vag turbo's to ~270bhp then wave goodbye :D

my neighbour has an LCR and he bought a 330ci with the intention of selling the LCR, but sold his 330ci and kept the remapped LCR while he looks for something else he likes to replace the LCR

he wasn't taken with it and it wasn't as fast as his LCR, it did have a nice note when he booted it though

He's right, its not "quite" as quick at speeds under 100. Top end the 330i/ci has much more grunt, and its a nicer car all round.

I'd certainly take a well specced 330ci over my LCR.

No one has called it slow and that is what I was emphasising on you get nice luxury and good enough performance, just not a greatly competitive performance.

The only quality build and interior is the A3 I mentioned, even then they are two completly different cars to drive.

In my position I could get something like a civic type R or R32 for hothatch looks, comfort and quick 0-60 or I could get a VX220/Elise for speed and looks. However, it has become apparent that the middleground and best overall car I can get for my money would be a 330Ci Convertable sport E46.

It IS quick (coming from my golf), it is refined, it is sporty, it is convertable for the summer, it doesn't run out of juice above 90mph, it has 4/5 seats, it has space inside, it has a nice noise. It is the ideal car, yet it just doesn't stand out enough for me :D I can see myself being torn between the 330Ci conv and the VX220/elise. Head says 330Ci, heart says VX220.

Which one would you say is a better driver's car?

Me?

The e46 BMW.

Its more precise, its got better handling characteristics, just generally better feel from the pedals and steering wheel, and feels more involving.

The LCR is good don't get me wrong, but its not really comparable.

Ah but thats a subjective criteria! What if you only trawl up and down the motorways each and everyday, like i would imagine a good 75%+ of the UK motorists.

I loved my golf to bits, and i drove it like i stole it each and everyday. I also love to drive my 330i but in a completely different way. Its a smoother drive, less hooligan like. Mind you saying all this i also miss my S8 which just performed the same no matter the conditions, until it went bang boo hoo, sniffle

yea he wasn't saying it was a bad car, just couldn't live with spending money on a supposed upgrade which felt slugging compared to his LCR (it's pushing about 270bhp).

he's now self employed earning a fair bit of wedge so is looking at an rs4 ...that's more like it :D

I have an E46 318 se at the moment and make regular trips to stoke and back throughout the year and have never had any comfort issues! there have been times I wished I had cruise control but then I just look forward to the new car :p I don't even have leather sports seats either so it has to be 100x better in a 330 no?!!

Motorway cruising is really nice an any E46 though I'd say :)

That's 2 seconds slower on 0-60!!! How on earth will it keep up??

6.8-7 seconds for the 330, don't care about autocar whatcar abccar or whatever other magazine. The quoted figure was pre remap for the TDI, before anyone thinks I am saying it is faster I am not.

Just stating a remapped 170 would not get wasted by a 330!

At 1.5 to 2 seconds slower on 0-60, it absolutely will!

Why wouldnt you care about Autocar? Do you seriously think random videos on Youtube are a better indicator of performance than a proper test using Accurate Racelogic data recorders at Millbrook proving ground?

Seriously?

The 330i is a lot quicker than 7 seconds. Heck even a 530i is quicker than that (6.7 seconds) and the 330i is lighter.

Huh? After a remap the figures do change.

It really would though.

How can you know that without trying it?

I'm not basing my findings on YouTube, it is you basing them on a mag. I don't think it is a lot quicker than 7 seconds, have you tried it? As I said I've been in an A3/R32 V6 and it beat the 330 easily from standstill.

as much as I love VW's, the golf diesel is going to get toasted if it only has a stage 1 map...

MK5 golf 2.0tdi 170 GT

weight: 1445kg
bhp (stage1): 205bhp
power:weight - 141 bhp/tonne

BMW 330CI (picked a 2000 as it was the first stats I found)

weight: 1505kg
power: 228bhp
power:weight - 151.5 bhp/tonne
