All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

Hope Quaresma has signed for Inter. Watched the Portuguese match tonight and he was the worst player on the pitch by a mile. Apart from a few tricks he was incredibly wasteful on the ball and incredibly lazy off it. Never seen him play any different either so don't know why he's so highly regarded around Europe

As for the Villa stories, there could very well be some truth there but like MrG says our priority should be the RM spot not another forward. Fair enough if we can manage to get a decent winger and Villa as well but if we can't then the only way it could be justified would be if Villa moved into Gerrard's role behind Torres and Gerrard played from the right but i can't see that happening.

I guess part of it is that I just hate it when not buying a player comes back and haunts us. I just know that if we dont sign Villa, then one of the other big 4 will, most likely Chelsea... and I just know that will come back to haunt me in one competition or another.

Added to that , I've never been a fan of 1 up front, I always prefer 2 up front, and sadly I really dont see anyone else of Torres quality in our squad to go up front with him.

I agree Pigeon_Killer, he seems more well known for the few wonder strikes he's scored than the rest of his game.

I watched the other match tonight because I thought Portugal would rest players (which they did) and I thought a match where both teams needed to win would be better (it was :p), but from what I did see on the few occasions I flicked over Quaresma was utter tosh, as you said, always giving the ball away wastefully.

Personally, ive never been impressed with Quaresma.

What ever happened to the Quagliarella to United rumors from last season? He'd be a cracking buy for United.

Can Liverpool afford to spend £20mill+ again for a striker? I think everyone can see how poor Liverpool are on the wings so they should spend money there, Arshavin would be a very good player for them imo.

As for Bentley to Liverpool, they signed Pennant so you never know, wouldn't be surprised to see another Arsenal reject join Liverpool ;)

Don't get me wrong, he's a great player when he wants to be but that's not very often recently plus his attitude stinks and you know that if he were to stay he'd be complaining within about 2 months that he wished he'd left.
If we can get £15m-£20m for him I'd take it happily:)

Who would you want bought in if he was to leave? He really is a monster of a player and you will find it hard to find a player like him to take his place. He has had some injuries this season and the uncertainity around the club doesn't help either

See in my opinion its almost the reverse question, can Liverpool afford NOT to spend £20 million on another striker.

No matter which way I cut it, we are still a long way behind MU and Chelsea in regards to our chances of winning the league. Unfortunately, these days, to win the league, you need to spend the ££. We're talking about , what, £15-20 million for Barry...I also hear talk of Bentley and/or Downing and/or Milner. I have to be brutally honest when I say that I dont think those choices will bring us the league title.

Now dont get me wrong, I am not saying that simply signing someone like Villa will give us the title, but I am saying that he is the standard of player we need if we are going to be serious about giving the likes of Chelsea and MU a run for the season.

( I should add that when it comes to Villa I am heavily biased, I first watched him play when he was 17...might have just turned 18 now that I think about it, but anyway...back then I wanted us to sign him. The chance never arose, now it has, and I am eager that we do)

Because currently upfront isnt our problem, at the moment we have Babel Kuyt and Crouch who can sit upfront with Torres, Babel Kuyt Gerrard and Benayoun can all sit in the hole behind Torres too. But when it comes to having someone on right wing, we'v got Gerrard, which is a waste and doesnt really work, we'v got Pennant, who isnt going to cut it, and we'v got benayoun, who isnt a wing player, he just cuts inside etc.

Fair enough, if you think thats good enough. Personally I would like to see a little more ambition in our purchases, and I dont think that Barry, Milner, Downing or Bentley is showing the kind of ambition which wins titles (no offense to them or their respective teams)

But whatever, its late and I'm bored of the debate now. I will simply have to accept that if we spend £15-20 million on someone this summer its going to be (in all probability) one or more of those.

On the plus side, at least this year my expectations at the start of the season will be low for a change. Should help me to deal with any disappointment.

Just signing Villa won't win you the title, the reason he has looked so good for Spain is because he has had Xavi, Iniesta and Fabregas playing behind him giving him all the service he needs and those two won't get top quality service at Liverpool. You have found your 20+ goal scorer but on the wings you are average, you already have Torres, Crouch and Kuyt up top, apart from Torres the others aren't top quality but they certainly aren't terrible either. Just look at Pennant + Benayoun, lets be honest here those guys are mid-lower club standard players and Rafa has spend £10mill+ on the pair of them. This summer Quaresma, Van der vaart, Diego and Arshavin are all available to buy and all of them are very good players so Liverpool can't complain about lack of options in the transfer market. The rumours that Rafa is willing to spend £15mill+ on Barry just sum up why Liverpool won't be winning any title. He is ok but certainly not worth £15mill and do you really need another central midfield player because that is where he is at his best, he can do a job on the wing but that isn't his best position mainly due to a lack of pace. Up to £15mill I'd say three of those players in that list will probably be yours with Quaresma possibly going for more but I personally would rather have one from the other three rather than him.

we'v got our defense sorted, last season we knew it was lacking a bit, and then we suffered the injury problems. Look at it now.. Its good.
We'v got a fully bedded in Torres, we'v got Babel and Lucas growing.
We'v got our new fullbacks to see in action, though I expect Carra to be playing RB a bit.

I dont see how buying Downing would be bad really, he got 9 league goals last season.
Hes a fit young lad, his game is growing etc etc. I wouldnt mind seeing him at Anfield now tbh, I think hes going to mature into a very good player. Seems to be a reluctance to try Babel on the right though so I think Rafa definately sees Babel as his left sided man, doesnt even get much of a look upfront, although that could change.

We need more english players anyway dont we?

Downing is nowhere near Liverpool quality. Well maybe he is given the quality of some of their signings over recent years, but he's shouldn't be a player Liverpool want if they actually want to go to the next level.

Good player but not the sort we need, he tends to play behind a main striker, the same as Tevez and Rooney, we need the front man.

Quaresma is a bit of an enigma.

I've seen games where he has completely run the show and been unplayable, almost making Ronaldo look like a pub player in comparison. However he is very inconsistent and doesn't deliver all the time.

The fact he failed to make an impact at Barcelona also could cast some doubt over how could handle playing for a big club, I think he is maybe the type that is happier as a big fish in a small pond. Some might say he made that move a bit too early, but then plenty of others have succeeded as teens (e.g. Ronaldo).

I really hope we don't sign Bentley, the guy's a total ****. Not only ins't he as good as he thinks (better than what we have though), he's not the type of RM we need.

Yea, I remember his interviews years ago and he came off as a cockney jack the lad kind of guy. Very arrogant and seemed to think he was better than he was and was going to be better than he really has become (lol).

Like a lot of our youth squad players, a midtable side is where they're going to flourish and get a lot of football. They wouldn't cut it for a top four side. I was very surprised e.g. that you purchased Pennant a year or two ago.

I think Tombstone mentioned going for the title. Odd Q, but is Rafa really going for the league? I know the fans want it badly (I have two red housemates...jeeze..) and he constantly "says" it's a priority, but does he really want one/think one's necessary? Ok he finished third the season before but by prioritising the Champ's league he got to the final. Last season fourth in the league and the semi's. Rafa keeps coming out and saying that sometimes he wants his star players fresh for the run-ins. The amount of money that the club would get with a good European run by far exceeds the extra money you get from finishing 1st compared to 3rd in the league (£1m prize money?). Profits would be higher as well, as you'd have to spend a lot more just to climb two extra places or you could accept entry into next years competition by finishing fourth and playing a qualifier. Just an odd random thought.

Exactly - I think you are totally spot on, think after last night' showing Quaresma will stay where his is - pity really but not the consistant threat he needs to be (mind you Nani wasnt that much better)

Moutinho is going to a massive club this summer and will be a bargain (wont be Utd, the one thing we dont need is another CM - attack or defensive minded)

Villa doesn't want to leave Spain and wants to play for RM or Barca according to reports on the radio this morning:)
