All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

Downing for 8-10million. Don’t sign Barry and put the 10million towards Villa.
If Rafa wanted him, I have no doubt that he would sign.

Sell Alonso and bring in Bentley for 12mill and 3mill for a reserve keeper?

If you add the sale of Carson, Riise and Crouch we have quite a pot to spend. I doubt Rafa has been given an empty wallet this summer and told to sell to generate funds to buy. Hicks sounded surprising confident when interviewed that Rafa would have funds available.

Why would you listen to anything Hicks has to say, let alone believe it?

He's lied through his teeth on several occasions. I think he (Rafa) probably got a few million and the majority will have to be made with player sales.

The signings people are talking about for the club (Villa, Milner, Barry, Bentley, Dossena etc) would smash the £30m barrier that we used to buy Torres and Babel last year - which was funded via a seperate loan and still hasn't been paid off.

Not too optimistic to be honest.

I know you have a new stadium to fund - but surely the prize money from a top four EPL finish, TV money plus your CL run should amount to a tidy sum (even if you have to pay for Torres and Masch out of it)

I know Utd got around £30m from the CL but I dont believe we got a huge amount more than the semi-finalists or Chelsea, so I would be surprised if you got much less than £20 - £25m for the run

Surprised you are spending £15-20m on Barry considering who you already have (even without Alonso) - admittedly those are the advertised amounts, it could be less than that, unlikely as its ONiel though I would have thought.

A Times report I saw quoted recently stated the top four in the EPL all got around £40m+ last seaon ( prize and TV money) - which theoretically is roughly the same amount as T & M should have cost you (I cant see Mascherano costing much more than Hargreaves) - which leaves the CL money to spend, if the board give it to Rafa of course

Of course if Masch purchase wasnt already accounted for by last year's prize money etc

Player sales should allow for £30m+ (Alonso for £14m, Crouch £10m, Riise £3m, plus any others) just rumoured prices, if you get a better price on one you may well lose out on another - seems about right though

Thats my take on it and all three I mentioned should be reasonably easy to sell or have a few rumoured suitors, so plenty of money to spend IF the split board allows it (I think this is the biggest factor in attracting new players if the board room fiasco isnt sorted out)

There are expenses in football. Liverpool don't make the money that Man Utd and Arsenal do, in fact they make a loss. I believe Arsenal made about £50m profit last year, compared to a £30m loss for liverpool. They can't just buy anyone and hope for the best, unless they want to be the next leeds UTD

IINM it was actually our holding company which made a £30m loss rather than the club (similar with Utd's who's holding company lost ~£50m).

...said Mendieta was going to be a hit :p

Was superb for us until he got a serious injury. Came back and he had lost any pace he had and struggled after that. Was important player for us the year we won the carling cup.

We got a good 18 months out of him although giving him such a long contract was a mistake.

He is, not sure what difference that makes though.

Makes a large difference. No chance of any player moving between Boro and Liverpool (bosman signings aside) whilst Parry is still at Liverpool.

Downing won't be moving this summer anyhow. Is far too important a player for us, only signed a new deal in January and is more then happy at Boro for now. Circumstances may change in 12-18 months dependent on how we progress this season.

Why though?

Also i don't want or think we're after Downing either.

edit: if you're talking about the Ziege transfer then you're being extremely naive to think that'll make any difference.

Naive how, I'm pretty sure I know more about Boro then you do. Gibson will not do business with Parry full stop.

If you knew anything about Parry then you'll know he probably had very little to do with the transfer or any future transfers.

And regardless of that i find it extremely hard to believe that you'll refuse to do business with us on the back of one incident, which these days is hardly a rare event.
