I've played little else since WoW's release. Still load up the likes of CSS every now and again keep my hand in so to speak.
If you DO look at WoW, play the free trial and start a human melee (I cant really speak for horde - I found the tauren the most appealing and their start area is pretty good too)character (rogue or warrior as paladin is rather unrewarding in later levels) with 2 gathering professions (pick 2 from mining, herbalist and skinning, i'd recommend mining and skinning).
You will find it generally easier to level and get a feel for the game with more armour and a "run up and hit things" approach.
The human start area is generally one of the more polished and has the least clutter in the way of moving around to quest area's etc.
I know a lot may disagree with the above, tis my opinion. The rogue is probably the easiest class in the game to level though and the warrior (so long as you keep your gear in shape) is also a powerhouse, if you take the warrior and learn to tank you will also ALWAYS be wanted for group work, groups = making friends = more rewarding playing experience.
If/When you come to play "for real" get the battlechest as it's generally £5 saved over the 2 seperately (see it for around £18 in the likes of zavvi/virgin megastore) and roll a draenai or blood elf. The new starting area's for these races they added in the expansion are VERY highly polished. The quests flow nicely and push you into the right areas and make doing several quests at once easilly.
(eg: Quest 1: Go west and scout the area, Quest 2: Over that hill to the west kill me some bears, Quest 3: I could really use some bear skins. The other start area's do it well but it was really refined for the expansion).
