!!!IN STOCK ATI 4870!!!

I don't mean to rain on your parade mate but I was just about to order from what I think is the same place, but had to ring them first to be sure they had stock. I wasn't very happy with what I heard either.

They say if you order by 8pm you'll get it tomorrow but that sign is wrong, they have 29 on pre-order but they're not arriving until next week. I'll probably end up ordering from OcUK as nowhere seems to have them.

I don't mind waiting and saving £60.

Thank god for the massive etailers who do not price guage and only operate at 3-5% margin. They are the one's that force prices down quickly.

Yeah but that's the point isn;t it? Massive been the key word. Large warehouses, low overheads, straight in and out.

Of course they don't always have stock when they say they do or the number expected don't arrive and nobody can tell you what is going on.

I remember the 8800GT launch. I had to cancel orders with 3 companies due to them not getting any/enough stock in to fulfill pre-orders. Two weeks with no computer.

Well, I'm not blown away by the 4870s in Crossfire from tweaktowns testing, but I'll wait until Guru3d get there's up as I find there's the most accurate... however, as a single card solution, I'm liking this 4870... just want one with 1gb that's all and I think this will in crossfire blow the GTX280 into touch bigtime.

Cheers Pug

Hmmm....an average 80% price hike over the 4850, but only 25% faster than the 4850 on average.

Why bother?.

Surely 2x4850 in xfire represents better value for money.

either.

And as with 8800GT's there is no guarantee that they get their stock next week either. ;)

Only a very very small % of people want two cards, CF or SLI etc many people couldnt care less about or dont have the correct MB

I don't see why everyone is crying foul... OCUK have them, people want them and not many other places currently have them which drives demand and price up. And OCUK obviously wouldn't set them at that price if they didn't think people wouldn't buy them. Just wait for prices to settle down a bit if you really want lower prices, inflated UK prices are nothing new. USA get's an RRP of $300 + VAT, UK gets $400 + VAT yes there's a difference but the difference is quite similar in all other components sold.

Yes but the 4870 is ATI's flagship card, if people think its price is poor then they must think Nvidias GTX280 is disgusting ?

I think the GTX280's price is even more so. What I'm disgusted more in though is the 4870 £60 price hike.

Always the same. Price/performance never goes up in the same ratio.

The 4870 is ATI's fastest single graphics card and hence has a price premium.

A GTX280 is over 300% more than a 8800GT but doesn't offer 300% more performance, maybe 100% max.

Some people don't have dual 16x pci-e 2 slots (x28 and x48 boards only) and yes 4850 xfire does offer better value for money same as two 9800GTX for £260 in SLI is much better value for money over a GTX280.

Exactly, I spoke to somewhere else who claimed stock, then when pressed harder they said couldnt ship until next week, yeh right.............full of **** they were lol

It's the whole SLI debate all over again. It's only really worth it if you have the money to buy two cards, that while faster, still cost more than the single card AND you need a good motherboard that is compatible to run them in (like an X38/X48). Which a lot of people don't.

You seem to have missed the point being made;

I will agree the HD4870 is priced very nicely when compared to the GTX280

HOWEVER

when compared to the HD4850 the price comparison isn't so good. The HD4850 is nearly half the price of the HD4870 yet offers around 80% of the performance. (This is going by OCUK pricing of course).

I believe this is the point that is being made about the HD4870s pricing.

We've actually been getting the US price + VAT on the graphics cards lately. OCUK aren't selling at the RRP, they're price gouging for those early adopters.

As long as they have them in stock by friday, I'll be ordering 2, for £180 each, you can't go wrong at all.

Time to remove your head from your backside Tom. :o ;)

I thought Tom said next week so hence no stock this Friday. So what you going to do then? Buy elsewhere for more money or wait? :p

No way I'm ordering until:

- there's a 1gb version
- the X2 is out
- the drivers can be demonstrated to be mature enough to take advantage of the card's technical design
