** The Official ATI RV770/RV700 Series Review/Overclocking Thread **

My PCI-E is at 120mhz, and my vram was at 1200mhz....the extra bandwidth seemed to really boost my score which so far leads me to believe that the 4870 might actually be worth the extra price. I will do more testing to determine if the extra bandwidth helps very shortly.

This has probably been posted before a "few" times, but just how badly are 4850s bottlenecked in X8 crossfire rather than full x16?

Hi all,

My Sapphire 4870 arrived this morning and using auto tune it selected :

780 (Core) \ 1090 (Mem)

Core temp under load is 83-88 Degrees C.

Forget it 2 x 8 pcix 1.1 but the new pcix 2 at 2 x 8 seems fine with the hd4850 in My tests

Ah just found an article on the internet (tweaktown I think) they tested x8 against X16 crossfire, performance only seems affected when 2560x1600 resolution and lots of AA and AF is used.

Careful, You and Me know we are talking PCIEX ver2 which is double the bandwidth..that's not ver1.1

Seen this one?

If that's to be believed (not sure it's that bad), then its a lot more than just 2560x1600 with AA.

There's more on Tomshardware > PCI Express 2.0 Graphics Cards Tested Doesn't look anything like as bad.

What's auto tune ? and hows the Fan ?

Auto-Tune is the overclocking tool within the catalyst control panel.

The fan probably spins up to about 50% although i havent put my side panel back on my case yet. The 100% fan spin up which happens if the PC is booted up sounds like a jet plane.

Just penciled to 1.18v idle 1.48v load :)

tested at 850/1100 so far and of course passed with flying colors. Am hoping to do over 900mhz on this voltage.

28c idle and 34c load :)

Good Man...Just making/modifying a cooler dual slot, will report temps later but it's a fiddely job...gave up the other day :D

on the 4850. I haven't even seen any 4870 overclocking results yet, though it would be interesting as it has a very beefy power regulation circuit as well as some other stuff.

There was a review the other day on a 4870 and they overclocked it to 790 core/shader and 4400 memory, will see if I can find it

Fantastic, out of interest how hot are the fet's /vrm's ?

they get a bit hot but I have good sinks on them and a fan blowing across the card. The memory gets VERY hot, but I am overvolting slightly to 2.12 (2.04 stock)
