** The Official ATI RV770/RV700 Series Review/Overclocking Thread **

and if i wanted to change the fan speed, i would just use that bios editor?... how safe/dodgy is using a peice of software like that?..

It's not that dodgy..although it's always a good idea to have a spare card around to reflash it just in case something goes wrong. And until we have software driver control, the bios is the only way to control the fan (unless you have an asus card).

Hey gurusan,

So if you clock a 4850 to 750/1100 how far off the benchmarks of a stock 4870 would you be and would you need to pencil mod to get above 720 on core?

I don't think I would be very far off at all. However I did try 750mhz with just the bios voltage adjustment and it crashed...I did not try below that so it may be stable at 740mhz or so...
So yes you would need a small voltage bump by doing the pencil mod or something....but then you might as well just go to 1.3ish because then you are good for over 800mhz :)

Until I see concrete proof that GDDR5 does anything significant I believe that the 4850 is far better bang/buck than the 4870. The 4870 performs roughly 25% faster than the 4850, while having a 20% faster clock rate. So that means the gDDR5 is giving a measly 5% increase in performance for what, another 80 pounds?

i have not done many benchmarks. I am waiting for some random wc bits to arrive so I can get it underwater first. Was hoping they would come today but apparently not!!

argh it's just 3 1/2" barbs that I need.

Be interesting to see any results to see what you need to clock a 4850 at to match stock 4870 results on the usual benchies/games

Think the diff is around 60 now at most online places, but yeah if price increases equated to performance increases the 4870 would be around £140 and a GTX280 would be around £200 :)

Cool the 4850 should fly under water. Will be good to see what the 4850 can do overclocked against a 9800gtx+ as i don't think the 9800 has the overclocking headroom of the 4850 with decent cooling and volt modding.

will that be likely in the near future or not?

hmm so can you change the fan speed with driver software with an asus card? if so methinks i'l grab one of those for an extra tenner

I did that before briefly on the 4850...but now there's no need for it as there's fan control via the bios

It's a bit confusing, I know...I think I have some idea of which ones are which though.

I think Clock state:

0: boot clocks, I just left this one as is.

1: power saving mode, I changed vGPU to .99 to save even more power

2: low power 3d, or perhaps UVD? or both? left as is

3: High power 3d I believe.....changed to desired clocks and 1.4v to get
1.20v load

7:high power 3d, again? I don't know, I changed this to the same as clock state 3 though, I think one of these might be uvd.

Anyway those are the only ones you need to edit as the ones greyed out will automatically fill out according to what you put in the other boxes.

Cheers.....think I just about worked that out looking at You mod bios, If the Guys get the computorbase editor up and running for the new cards we will be able to cross reference, the power states were more logical in that editor ;)

Gut feeling is You will not see the big overclocks like the 3850,I think the power regulation circuit will hold it back, but the big architecture boost make this card fantastic and it just requires a little work on the cooling

I think the 1ghz clocks will be difficult as well, but some people are already having over 900mhz stable on air...so it is looking promising. I'm hoping for around a 900mhz clock for daily usage.

On another note, I've just done a pencil vmem mod, bumped it up from 2.04v to 2.14v and so far am at 2400mhz (1200) stable

900 mhz on 4850 or 4870 ?

on the 4850. I haven't even seen any 4870 overclocking results yet, though it would be interesting as it has a very beefy power regulation circuit as well as some other stuff.

hi all

i have a gigabyte P965 DS4 motherboard. Theres no mention on their website what pci-e version it has.

will the 4850 or 4870 work in my mobo? thanks

hi gurusan i have been following your posts on here and xtreme systems really interesting stuff.

im new to bios flashing and overclocking cards and i was wondering if you could answer me a few questions.

i am considering buying a hd4870 and would like to know if powerplay works like the new msi bios on the 4850s?

if i buy a new card and it doesnt work and flash it to an updated bios would my warranty still be valid?

I don't know, as I don't have a 4870, and judging from the forums it seems like no one else does yet either..?

Flashing your bios will invalidate your warranty. So you've got to do so at your own risk. It's a good idea to keep your stock bios handy along with a 2nd cheapo video card which you can boot off of and use to flash the old one in case you do a bad flash.

On another note, I just did a 3dmark06 run and am pleasantly surprised at the result. This was at 720/1200 with an E6750 @ 3.64ghz, 4gb OCZ @ 1090mhz 5,5,4,14

Not bad for a dual core and single card.

very nice.

i'm sooo tempted to just get the 4850 and overclock. whats the max clock you can get without doing a pencil mod?

I think You can create a floppy which automatically flashes a card upon boot as a savior, did one for my 8800gt I presume the principles are the same as win nv flash.

The score should be higher going by gurusan's score. Any ideas whats wrong? The 3dmark vantage score is what it should be.
