4870 bench

Max on my sapphire is 880/1200 under a maze4. Memory/VRM's cooled via heatsinks.

The standard HS is very good and if your core is capable the standard HS should cut it no problem if you don't mind the noise.

How many heatsinks do you need for the vrm's mate ? Planning to stick a maze 4 on mine when it gets here, not quite sure if i've got enough ramsinks here

i would say around 850-870is the max mate
what chip are you running and what speed mate

Its a Q6600 running at 3.5Ghz (425x8) on a Asus Rampage Formula with Vista 64, upped the GPU to 820 and it froze in 3DMark06

will try to push it a little more later got it up to 16925 GPU 815MHz and memory 1090MHz, my highest score with the 8800gts 640Mb was just over 15000 so i am happy with the upgrade :D

Can you control the fan speed ?????

seems like the fan is running slow , it comes on at full speed when booting then slows down and dont seem to increase in speed whilst testing:confused:

no mate cant control the fan speed yet have to wait for rivatuner for that bud

What Im amazed at with the 4870s is how well the ram overclocks, with new tech you would expect them to be pretty much at the limit but everyone is getting well over 1000mhz (4000mhz gddr5)

Even though I have nvidia stock Im very happy ATI have bounced back.

I'm so gutted with my overclocked I'm thinking of selling this one to get a sapphire, I'm maxing out at 800 on the core and 1000 memory or stock core and 1100 memory, best I can do is 820/900 or 790/1100 really, either more voltage of dud overclocker as the cooling is fine I've checked the temps.

Bad luck mate, that is indeed the worst 4870 o/c I have seen by quite a chalk.

Yea :\, it flew up to 790/4400 and was fine and I thought I was not even pushing it and then the ****** craps out any higher, dont know if I should just get a better cooler as the noise is ******* me off now and up the voltage.

Well mine tops out at 840/1100 under water but that may have something to do with me :(

I had 900/1100 with no artifacts in ATI tool.

I then went 950/1100 and all was still fine.

Ran a crysis benchmark and all was great.

Got greedy and went for 1000/1100. Crysis artifact and system crash. On reboot, even bios boot up screen corrupted. :(

On cold reboot evrything back to normal except now everything over 840 on the core causes artifacts on ATI tool.

Guess I had a good one and broke it :(

You need 4 or 2 depending. The VRM's ( 4x ) are tiny so you will need to hacksaw a low profile heatsink and use some double sided stickytape with possibly a dab of hot glue to secure the mount.

So should a new cooler boot my overclocks or is it just at its limit? I'm still waiting for something that works to give extra voltage too.

I'm thinking of ordering a new cooler on monday.

TBH that sounds fine. Memory, I wouldn't worry about because its DDR5. Anything over 800 IMHO is great it's not like you will be able to tell the difference.

The other thing is they might have started speed binning the chips for the OC versions. You may end up with a worse card.

You rekon I'd have a good chance of getting to 850-900 with say an S1 and upping the voltage when its possible to do so?
