4870 bench

You rekon I'd have a good chance of getting to 850-900 with say an S1 and upping the voltage when its possible to do so?

With a voltage mod I'm sure 900 will be easy if not more. I think the stock cooler is pretty good if you manual adjust the fan and can stand the additional noise. I couldn't comment on the S1.

Why don't you try water?

I decent loop is one of the best investments you can make if you want to overclock and have a quiet reliable system.

Water is too much, I dont have the money, when I go to uni and if I find a decent student sort of job I plan on saving up and around christmas time moving to quad core and possible a crossfire setup as it would be something new and a first for me.

Its worth the investment mate and can be quite cheap with the bargains on the MM.

I'm using a PA120.3 Rad, Swift GTX ( Bowed ) CPU Block, D5 Pump and my trusty Maze 4 GPU Block. Drop in some Feser One and your sorted. Highly recommended and would last years unlike other PC related equipment.

mine will only do 780/1050 after that it artifacts in ati tools with fan speed at 40%,idle temps are 42 and load is 60,gutted when i see what everyone else is getting

Well I feel better now I aint the worst, but 780, thats almost as bad as my X800XTPE overclocked, ohh I remember that, and the 9600NP before that overclock 230Mhz on passive cooling :D

Luck of the draw. 840/1100 is definitely my tops now however I am convinced i had one capable of above 900 before I borked it.

Looks like 800-900 is probably the range of these chips until a bios volt mod comes out.

However just be playing GRID at 1680 x 1050, everything on max and 8xcsaa and getting 70-90fps which I am over the moon with tbh. Destroys my old 8800GTS G92 even if the 4870 struggles to beat it in crysis and 3dmark06.

Something odd with my vista setup though, verh high crysis only scores 20 fps which is very slow yet I am top score in directx9 1680x1050.

With the GPU benchmark I'm getting 43 FPS Avg at 1920x1200 everything high apart from post and shadows at medium in DX10. Thats stock clocks on the 4870 with my Q9450 at 3Ghz.

The 4870 destroys my 9800GTX @ 850/2500.

Same settings just at 1680x1050 I get 46.195. Are you running on a slipstreamed vista and before you ran the test did you exit everything or something?

I must be cursed, I try make my overclock as stable as possible on cpu and ram and all that THEN I optimize vista slipstreaming it making it run quick and I still get crap fps I must be cursed :(

On top of that Grid crashes when I am running at 790/1000 now :(

You need 4 or 2 depending. The VRM's ( 4x ) are tiny so you will need to hacksaw a low profile heatsink and use some double sided stickytape with possibly a dab of hot glue to secure the mount.

Thanks for the info mate:D nice one !!! Should have enough sinks by the looks of things

Just playing grid, all high/ultra, 1680x1050, 8xMSAA, was getting between 67 and 96fps it looked like, smooth as silk. That sound about right? stock clocked then I upped it to 790/900.

Just the Business Vista Install with lots of things running. A none tweaked setup apart from Indexing is turned off.

I have a 120mm Fan sat ontop of my Maze 4 blowing down over the sinks. I would recommend some additional cooling if you dont have decent air flow.

Looking at the temp sensors on GPUID I'm running between 37-40'c on the 3 sensors.

Thats good to know bud, looking good;) Hopefully i will get some good clocks out of mine under water. Moving from a high clocked 8800GT on a 24" res

Should see some good results hopefully

I must be cursed, something must be wrong with my setup if I am scoring lower than most other people as I run with minimal stuff running unless its just me that thinks exiting everything helps.

Does Vista business have slightly less stuff running than Ultimate?

Or maybe quad core is making a bigger difference than I think? Like 4+fps?
