Porsche 911s

X50= power upgrade.

The new 997- Gen2 is out now in 2wd form, with new PDK transmission, similar to VAG DSG, lots of other refinemants as well, going to be testing it at Silverstone next week!

Excuse me...you can't say that, and then not post pics of said line...sort it out!

As I posted that comment I was cursing that out of 600 shots, I didn't get a single one of that row! The closest I got was this one, which only shows 2 (and a 928 parked in the wrong line, they were deliberately positioned to be in model order)

Imagine another half a dozen or so to the left of the pic please, there were there honest!

lots of refinements? As far as i'm aware PDK is just DSG that can cope with more Torque, i'm not sure what else they can impove upon?

A couple of other questions on 911s:

1. What is "semi automatic" transmission?

2. If you were in the market for a 911, would you use autotrader, trade or something else?

3. I have looked at some listings, and after the 911 part they have numbers (eg 996 or 997). Is this the age of the car (1996/1997 respectively) or something else?

Thanks

2) I'd go to either;
- An OPC - car will have a warranty, but expect to pay a 7-8K premium. You can add an equilivant Porsche warranty to any Porsche <9yrs old or <120K miles by passing an 111-point check and paying £895 per year. So you can buy privately, then do this.

- PH over AT. My personal experience is much better on PH and have only ever bought cars advertised online from here.

- From someone you know. I bought my Porsche from a friend. I knew him, and I knew the car. Safest bet.

- From a specialist dealer. Try 911virgin near heathrow. There are many other specialist Porsche traders.

Skidd.

I was lucky enough to get driven to work for nearly 2 years from 1990 in my boss's 944 turbo - lovely car but boy was it expensive to run!!!

I have to say Im not a fan of the targa's they just always looked wrong to me, and those Carrera GT's just look horrible to me from the back, I know they are blindingly quick but personally think 911 turbo's and GT2/3 are much nicer :D

Is it just me or is it worrying that the OP does even know which are the driven wheels in his car (irrespective of how often he drives it) and that he is considering getting a high performance car?

Being a fellow biker how can you not feel the sensation of how the power is pushing the car forward? Riding a bike is a really sensory thing.

I mean no offence by this by the way, I just find it a bit odd :)

haha, no offence taken. All quite true, but, I did explain earlier, I don't drive the MX5: since buying in 2006 I can probably count the number of times on my hands. And even then, they're generally short journeys.

On top of that, I'm really not that into cars(!) I like the way some look, and I like powerful things. For example, I have no idea how an engine works and I reckon that, although I'd work it out, I'd even struggle to change a wheel!! (I know this will probably anger some purists, but I really don't see why that matters: I a person wants x car, he doesn't have to be a mechanic or member of some special club)

Anyway, was discussing this whole proposal yesterday with Her Indoors, and she's hit the roof! I was proposing to sell my bikes (MX and road) and the MX5 and replace them with a 911 of some description. And yes, it does have to be a 911 because I just love the look of them.

The voice of reason (her) however, seems to have scuppered these plans: without a bike I'd have to take the train to work - that was the whole point of buying the bike in the first place (I HATE commuting on the train), and probably worse, she'd use the new car every day for work, which would just not be fair.

I was always going to buy a sports car this year, but have gone back to the drawing board. Looked for an RS6 last night... but that's a whole new thread (and ironically, I'm not sure I can actually afford a decent one!)

Not sure i would call the RS6 a sports car as such. Though i am starting to sense that straight line speed is one of the main criteria?

Indeed, but it does have a serious engine in it!

My mate's S5 is pretty good at turning, I assume the RS6 is still pretty good (albeit longer and faster?)

How do you get a sports car and still be practical (ish). The downside of the RS6 is it's size. The missus struggles to drive the warrior because of it's length (and tractor pedals, crap turning circle etc etc), so I guess she'd struggle with any for of estate car.

RS4? (won't be much smaller than an RS6 but will be lighter). I'd suggest looking at a TT-S but i'm a bit biased..

Not a fan of the RS4. Bit too normal looking for me.

The new TT is OK, but it looks like I need to be thinking more practical.

I did see a new shape X5 the other day. I'm guessing people on here will hate those with a passion, and I must admit that there is (quite a large) part of me that associates them with bum-holes.

This thread is now waay off track, BUT, I always had a soft spot for the Volvo T5. Is there a newer, better version or is it pap?

Thats the best bit about the RS4 imo, it's very subtle :)

I like the look of the Q5 - i always thought the Q7 was far too big (although if you go to NYC you'll realise in american terms it looks tiny).

Volvo? VOLVO??? :p

Q7, X5, Volvo. Were a long way home from the sports car now!!! The RS6 saloon and avant use exactly the same platform so are identical in size so don't let that fool you but yes it is a big car in general. The RS6 is a very good car but it is bit big and heavy if you are looking for a sports car, but has that progressed to a different idea now anyway? In which case we seem to be more down the M3, RS4 route. I prefer the M3 personally. Best bet now is probably to go away, rethink what you need or want (or can convince the mrs. of) from a car again and start a new thread.

Edit - That last bit sounded a bit patronising on reflection so sorry.

It didn't at all. I appreciate the good and honest advice, thanks - as you can see, I clearly have no idea what I'm doing!

Like say, I've taklen a step back and am re-considering the various options.

Practicality vs Sports car (and then I've not even thrown the Ducati 1098 into the mix yet either ;) )
