Hey folks, so dissapointed, after all the issues i've had with my K850i, I replaced it with a N82 Black.

And its rubbish.

I don't care about sat nav or Wi-Fi on the phone, im talking about basic texting and interface. It is terrible, the buttons are horrid, my thumb is basically bigger than 2 or 3 of the buttons in a column.

Why why why did Nokia spoil the phone with such a naff keypad? Also, the texting is rubbish compared to SE phones, you can't use the arrow keys to select characters like you could with the K850i.

Also, the interface (main menu) is a pain, looks boring and dull like the cheaper Nokia models.

Grrr am I the only N82 hater here?

Pretty much, and if you're having trouble texting on it I think you need an operation to reduce your thumb size.

I'm probably the most sausage fingered person you'll ever meet, and I find it a downright joy to text on. :p

Don't forget im coming from SE phones, which, I feel, are miles ahead of Nokia in terms of texting, which NEVER used to be the case.
Even my gf was commenting on how rubbish the buttons were!

I *WANT* to like the phone, first things first, is there any way I can not have those irritating buttons down the side of the screen? (on the standard screen with clock etc)

Also, is there any 'flash' menu's instead of the boring static icons etc?

i didnt like the keypad on the n82 at all. i dont mind the nokia way of working though - i was quite happy with my n95 although i found that a bit too small if my honest. most phones are though, these days. seems to be a form over function thing. my iphone though....brilliant.

New keypads are always learning curves, but that'll work out. Texting works differently to SE phones, no better no worse really, you'll also get used to that.

If you didn't want sat nav and wi-fi why get such a big clumsy phone? Could have had the 6210 6220 E51 E66 N78 or something else, depending on what features you wanted rather than the whole kitchen sink that is the N82. They all still use the powerful SymbianOS/S60v3 combo...

But hey at least the joystick won't break unlike EVERY SE phone :)

Erm my k750i's joystick is fine, I bought it second hand after it was used like 14 months, I have dropped the phone so many times, I have short circuited the whole phone by dropping it in the toilet, I have gone to partys with it ( losing stuff like the battery cap and I still don't know how ), I've played footy with it in my pocket ( it being hit by the ball a few times), yet the whole phone, inc. the joystick, still works perfectly fine...

Well lets say you're one of the few lucky ones, its a well known problem the designers never managed to fix from the t910 all the way upto the k800i or whatever the last one to have a joystick was. Eventually usually after around a year of use, they started becoming insensitive, or totally unresponsive. Just see google around.

//Edit: Actually even just a quick search of this section for joystick brings this, and i'm sure theres more if i could be bothered to look. Either way i owned the k700 it happened, and i've seen it happen with the k800 and k810 with friends :)

I threw my K750i as hard as I possibly could at a wall during a game inspired rage.

Don't ask.

It still works perfectly, just has a slight mark where it made contact.

As for the N82, it doesn't look that hard to text on...

I treated mine like a fluffy bunny and the camera stopped working after 6 months.

It was my 3rd K850i in less than 9 months, the reliability was terrible, yet to this date, I claim the W810i as being the best phone i've ever had.
Lovely keypad, small, only problem was the screen and camera quality when compared to newer phones.

I only like candybar phones, I nearly went for the C902i.

The 6220 classic keypad looks lovely, I guess I maybe wanted to see what wi-fi on a phone was all about, im sure it could come in handy?
The N82 is ok size wise, screen is clear, camera is nothing short of brilliant (love the video quality) but the interface will take some getting used to...

Im gonna use the N82 over the weekend and try and get used to it, I know what you mean when you say its a learning curve, after years of using SE im bound to feel a bit unsure when switching brands.

I agree the keypad sucks, especially for one handed texting because it's so squashed up at the bottom of the phone.

I can txt one handed on mine without looking. (not sposed to use my phone at work so I have to hide it sometimes :D )
The buttons were one of the things I was worried about, but after a few days it was fine.

What about the menu? Is there any way to get rid of the shortcuts all down the left hand side of the screen?

Also, i've noticed something I *do* like straightaway lol, the pencil thin button between the 'C' and 'back' buttons, that takes you to a menu, is there any way of customising that menu to let it take you to shortcuts you want, ie alarm clock?

Menu/Tools/Settings/General/Personalisation/Standby Mode/Standby - choose an option here to suit what you want. S60 Active Standby is the default, but you may find it's set to something your phone company has customised.

Also, the shortcut bar across the middle (when set to 'S60 Active Standby' can be change to whatever you want, do that under Menu/Tools/Settings/General/Personalisation/Standby Mode/Active Standby Apps.

If you'e got the same handbook as me, pg 79 - 80, and page 101 right at the back.
:)

Those buttons do look small.

Great stuff, thanks very much for your help guys, i'll have a look tonight and adjust the menu's.

The phone is orange branded but I have had it unlocked as im on O2.

I will debrand it soon I think, although I heard it voids the warranty if you change the product code... :/
