Gym Gloves and Protein Shakes

Errr, how exactly do they do 'nothing'? They do exactly what they are supposed to, protect your hands from the bar grip. Wearing gloves or not makes zero difference, lets not turn this into a 'macho' thing, you shouldnt be putting someone off wearing gloves if thats what they want to do, just because you look down on them.

Personally i use them because of my job, because i cant really afford to have hands that feel like sandpaper when im shaking the man of a man worth millions, its just not done.

And if your gloves are rucking up and hurting when your doing deadlifts then suggest trying another set of gloves.

It's nothing to do with it being a macho thing :/

I shake the hands of people worth millions too, they don't give two hoots if my hands are calloused. Besides they can tell I'm a man that likes to look after themselves, in fact it often sparks conversations (rugby being the main subject).

You get a much better feel the for the lift without gloves, use chalk, chalk is fine - your grip strength will improve. Your technique will improve because you can actually feel yourself lifting the weight. If gloves makes such a huge difference then you're lifting weights that are too heavy for you anyway.

Then again I did a lot of manual labour in my younger days and was active kid so my hands have become rather tough as a result. The snobbery of tans and callouses I think have long gone, certainly in the circles I mix with.

I really wouldn't recommend doing deadlifts with a mixed grip. It causes imbalance in your form, which you really can't afford when going heavy.

I disagree. A lot of professional powerlifters recommend doing them that way as you get better control of the bar. Secondly as PK said you just alternate them either between sets or reps - certainly when you start lifting heavy.

How long you been training for? Cos your hands will get use to it. I was always told not to wear gloves, what happens if you forget them 1 day? You will proberly waste a session because you dont have em.

I do now wear straps for deadlifts though cos its needed! Rest of the exercises I dont really think gloves are needed at all.

Straps are ok if they help you focus on form and do the exercises properly. Unfortunately a lot of people use them to cheat and jump up to weights they can't handle.

I'd bet a tenner on most of the strongest deadlifters on this forum using alternate grip. Your arms are just hooks hanging dead, it's not like you're curling or something mid-rep.

EDIT: To the OP, what sort of weight are you lifting? It sounds like you're quite new and haven't let your hands adjust yet.

Would it be worth trying this flavouring system?

R5Rich and fluffmct, I haven't been training for long but after just a few days at the gym I already have calluses on my hands. I'd rather just avoid getting them if possible.

Thank you very much, Pigeon_Killer. I'm now ordering a pair of medium gloves (will they be big enough for my average hands? I heard that the large ones aren't very big), small and large scoops, MP blender bottle and a 4.54kg tub of impact whey protein. I don't know whether to get oats and flavouring from myprotein, too, though. What do you recommend?

A guy I train with uses gloves but the problem is when the weight gets heavy that your grip starts to go. He can't use chalk with gloves so he has to take his gloves off anyway when we have a heavy day.

I'm not trying to say you shouldn't buy gloves, just that they might become obselete to you in a few months.

The only pair of gloves you'll ever need in your life are washing up gloves for the wife.

What exercises do you think you'll need them for?
LMAO :D

Oh purlease.... spare us! :o :p

I appreciate this advice, indeed I may not need them in a few months since my hands should toughen up over time anyway (I won't be using the gloves all the time, after all). It's just at the moment, at least, my hands can't take an awful lot and just hurt like hell. Also, because I'm new to this, I won't be aiming to lift massively heavy weights yet anyway so I shouldn't run into the problem your friend is having.

You shake the 'man' of a man worth millions? where I come from shaking someones 'man' is just not done either.

I see what your saying about wearing gloves, but frankly ive never had any of the problems your talking about, so im probably going to continue wearing them.
As for the scoffing at my reason, well, i was trained in the old style of being a salesman, where your suit and your smile are the most important things and taking a client out to lunch is worth a thousand signed contracts.

I leave the sales department do that and work for me ;)

I think what people's "issues" are is just to educate people into options adn the reasons behind things like gloves. It just depends what you want from your training etc.. :)

Well you keep saying that, but are you really trying to tell me that wearing bits of leather on your hands or not is going to change the long term outcome of weight lifting on your body?

If you say the answer is yes then i'll believe you, but honestly i dont see it.

you will be lifting heavy weights, heavy weights for you. ok you wont be pulling 200kg+ but for a new person 40kg might be the heaviest they can pull. its all relative :]

well for me, yes. I feel they hamper my feel for the lift (but I'm talking big lifts here), however I DO use chalk, maybe it's psychological, but I feel more confident with chalk than I do without.

not onto chalk yet myself, however, i do agree. i found using gloves limited what i could do.

Is the general consensus that I should buy a tub of Nesquik rather than some flavouring from myprotein?

Also, what oats should I get? Is there a particular pack from a supermarket that blends well because I don't want to spend a fortune on the stuff that myprotein sell.

Thanks again.

Ultra, I think I speak for us all when I say we're pre-occupied by the thought of shaking the man of a man worth millions.
