METAL GEAR SOLID 4 - Disappointed Thread *NO SPOILERS*

As much as I'd like to agree with Shep on this one I can't tbh. I brought the game due to the hype and have never played a MGS game in my life. Prior to purchase I'd read about the lengthy cut scenes and had decided to skip all of them as the story wouldn't make any sense to me why watch them I thought. Well I'm now at the start of Act 5 and haven't skipped one cut scene, and even more amazing the missus has been watching them as well and she hates games with a passion.

The reason being is because they are just so good. Still don't have a clue what the hell is going on but in my eyes the excellent cut scenes and immense gameplay make the game what it is.

Let be honest what do we have out that is better at the moment, GTA4?

You want to talk about wasting £40, that's exactly what I did + 30 hours of my life when I brought GTA4, the biggest overrated pile of horse **** of a game.

Don’t get me wrong, the cut scenes are fab! The level of detail and work that’s gone into it is amazing, but I just feel slightly robbed that there seems to be more cut scenes in this MGS than any game play.

I agree MGS's are renowned for cut scenes but 4 takes the biscuit. On the others the gameplay to cut scene ratio was hugely higher on the game play side, but not on number 4!

If 4 had longer acts to play or allowed you to use all your weapons wisely then it would be good... but people are saying stealth it?!?!

I have loads of weapons but know one to utilize them on!?!?!?

I have 1000's of drebin points and now can only buy ammo?!?!?!

I mean.. come on.....

Im gonna have to disagree with you on this shep, to me its the best game ive played this gen, and one of the best of all time (IMO). The gameplay is quite varied in places, the cut scenes are fantastic, only two "movies" in the entire game all the rest is engine and you can look around freely. There is more cut scenes in mgs4 than the others as it basically does away with the long codecs with long cut scenes, the codec conversations are there but very infrequant and short.
The game is so highly polished im sure i can see my face in it lol, i dont remember anyone mentioning screen tear, very bad aa, glitching etc in the game unlike some of the other big games out. The character models are some of the best ive seen, the little girl is perhaps the worst and she looks a little scary, but most of them are fantastic and snake has the best rendered butt in video games (lol). A few of the set peices in the game are outstanding, some its the thrill, some its the emotions in brings out, some in just true OMG moments. The Audio is worth getting at least a 5.1 amp for and in the first level the battlefield ambience is better than any COD game ive played, the audio alone should win awards lol.
I understand that this game is not to everyones taste, which is understandable, its not a game like Halo or COD4, instantly accessable and "easy" to understand gameplay, and it will never sell as well, its kind of like its its own genre if you see what i mean. Youre not wrong if you feel this way, just that most people dont feel the same way about this game as you do, and both in their own opinions are right. There are a few things i didnt like about this game but they are so petty and in the end i didnt care about them one bit, IMO MGS4 is not a game its an experience.:)

Your missing my point but thanks for posting.

Basically i like the cutscenes.... but there isnt enough gameplayer filler in between each one. The graphics are immense and some of the best ive seen. But to me.... its defo not the best next gen by far & not the worst.

IM NOT SAYING THE GAME IS BAD - IVE NOT EVEN COMPLETED IT....

IM SAYING - IVE BEEN ROBBED OF GAMEPLAY!

Everytime i turn the game on i dead loading it because i know.... ANOTHER CUTSCENE. What there of the gameplay to me feels and plays excellent but so far that hasnt been enough to warrant £40.

I loved MGS 1 but I think this one missed the mark somewhat. I don't mind long cut scenes but all they did was talk and talk and talk. I think it could have done with a lot of cuts here and there and thats coming from someone who likes long games/ books/ movies etc. I also agree about the beauty and the beast bosses seeming isolated from the main plot. I think part of the trouble is the devs trying to stretch out one long story when it ran out of steam ages ago. MGS 1 was the best because it had twists and turns and by the end seemed like a complete stand alone story. With number 4 the story isn't left with much room for new characters and shocking twists.. and those that it does do are so complicated and wrapped around its own mythology that its lost on most players.

Definitely going to give MGS4 another playthrough as I want to challenge myself a bit more with the sneaking aspect. I rushed through some parts just to finish the story.

It's not overrated, GTAIV was overrated. So far it's the best game I've played this generation but Bioshock isn't far behind. It won't be for long though because LittleBigPlanet looks really good :)

Hit the nail on the head!

MGS1 was a film come game that left you wanting more. MGS4 is telling you in great detail the info you didnt know about MGS1, 2 & 3. Its an addon basically. Its as though it was designed to be a film but they added in a little gameplay here and there to fill it out.

I love long games and wish it was longer and had more variation.... twists etc.

Yes it is. Splinter Cell is more game than movie, mgs is more movie than game. I like both of them very much, but once you put them side by side, its clear which one is better.

You can integrate a good story into a game without the need for endless talking in cut scenes though. All the best games do this Zelda, Deus Ex, Mafia, Half Life etc.

i agree with Shep to a degree, not enough gameplay, far to short.........nothing like the previous installments - i agree with that,

BUT in a strange way it still didn't disappoint.. as the non gaming story telling more than made up for it. I see this game more as a interactive story book with some elements of gameplay. would have liked more actual gameplay without resorting to setting to Big Boss Mode....but still wouldn't of missed not actually watching/playing what there was of the actual game

lol - im guessing the no spoilers bit doesnt count lol.

Thats why i kept all details basic and didnt mention much :D

Ive done 2 so far.... and they seem like bosses that dont have a great reflection on the story.

Its not really a spoiler, there are boss fights at some point *whistles*
;)

This is true. MGS just takes that and makes it into a movie.

But what movie has so much talking? e.g 45 min briefings talking about what the main hero is going to do. I just think the action and in fact the story its trying to tell is severely hampered by all the exposition, context and philosophy every step of the way and in relation to every single event that happens in the game.

I really enjoyed MGS4. I was a huge fan of the previous games. To find out the story and what happens in Mgs4 was awesome for me.

But everyone is different, im sure for the people who have not played the previous games they may not enjoy the latest one.

I dont understand this "not enough gameplay" argument - u can whizz through MGS1 & 2 in under 5 hours, so if anything this has slightly more than previous. The only difference is longer cutscenes

metalgear 1 and 2 were awesome.....3 I half played and 4 is good, but the cutscenes are OTT.

Am I the only one who hasnt got a clue about the storyline cos its so complicated?? I dont pay much attention to them I have computer on msn when they are on but I generally am just thinking hurry up I want to play!

Never-the-less it is a very good game with good graphics (and most importantly a smooth frame rate).

Worth buying a ps3 for?? Maybe, but it you already own a ps3 then it is a must buy.

Its not a game to be missed for sure. IF you havent played any of the MGS's it will be pretty pap. If you understand the whole story behind MGS but never played then you will be fine.

However.... the gameplay is no way near as long as 1 or 2....

It took me 14 hours to complete 2... and 15 for MGS1.
