All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

The bottom line is that top clubs are run as a business. Liverpool and Man Utd are both owned by Americans who are bearing the brunt of the credit crunch at the moment.

Many of their other investments are likely doing very badly and they simply can't justify splashing £18m - £28m (Barry or Berb) on a player, especially if that player can't guarentee a return on their investment. It also doesn't help that many clubs are holding on to unrealistic valuations of their players based on an economy which doesn't exist any more.

The prolonged transfers are a sign of the times and a sign of how football clubs are owned now.

In other news Silvestre possibly off to Arsenal! Didn't see that one coming.

Look your a Hull City fan now so go away!! :p

Wouldn't be a terrible signing, would give better backup than Traore at LB and allow him to go out on loan. Still want a CM though. At least the saviour Alex Song will be back soon :)

still no news on a new United striker then :(

I wish we'd just sell Saha first, then use the money from that and put it towards getting somebody if money really is an issue.

Instead of doing it the other way around :-/

I cant see how Utd have that much of a problem with money as we generated approximately £80m from the EPL and CL run last season

Even having to pay all of the money spent last summer we should have £20m or so remaining (without even thinking about the £12m or so generated this summer in sales)

Without even thinking about the TV money

I don't think it's a matter of affording Berbatov, it's a matter of the owners deciding that he doesn't represent good value-for-money.

Could play DM if we don't sign anyone else [x]

The only things he doesn't have going for him as a Wenger signing is that he's not under 21 and people have heard of him.

I'm such a filthy turncoat. :(

He's a Man U player though, personally i dont think Wenger would want him and i can't see Fergie selling to us anyway.

I don't think we need him.

I do.

Bags of PL experience, used to winning and can fit in where needed. Regardless of if he is good enough for Utd or not I think he would be a lot of use for us.

As you say though you wouldn't imagine they would sell anyone to a rival.

Hear Sheva is going on loan to Chelsea for a season. Buy the player for £30mill, play him a few times, if it doesn't work just loan him out. Same happened with Crespo and Veron.

Gotta love Chelsea, breath of fresh air for football that club is....
