All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

Hobbs is OK, Arbeloa is OK. We clearly can't afford wages / transfer fees to get anyone recognised quality in a single wing position, so I would say expecting to have cover for two cb's out without scraping the barrel a little is unrealistic. Man U have just got rid of their 4th choice cover (Silvestre) after Ferdinand, Vidic and Brown. Chelsea are supposedly losing theirs (Ivanovic) after Terry, Carvalleo and Alex. Arsenal have only just brought in a third choice. We are the only team with four good names in that position.

Hobbs is not ok and neither is Arbeloa at cb, surely you could see that when they had to play there last season?

Im not sure what you're talking about regarding us not having money to sign a winger. Rafa said last week that we've got the money available to sign another decent player (and we'll have more if and when Pennant and Voronin go), if we don't sign a winger it isn't because of a lack of money but a lack of top wingers.

The only reason why we should sell Hyypia is if we desperately needed the money (and £2.5m isn't going to make much of a difference) and it doesn't look like we do.

Having watched him play, it is fair to say he has a far better chance of making his way through hard work and commitment than through football flair, hence Carra is a far more realistic target :)

Terry has no flair, he's all about hard work, but I do see your point. There are very few defenders in history who can play football, so another Ferdinand could be well off.

I said the teams are well within the top 15 in the country, they finished 12th, 13th and 15th, but my statement wasn't accurate? Were they in the top 15 teams in the country or not?

Well within would suggest a fair spread of them from the middle, not making up three of the four lowest performers in the top 15. They were just within the top 15, better described as avoiding a last minute relegation battle (though they all had worrying moments).

I know you hate Newcastle so I'll let you off, but you can't actually believe the stuff you're writing can you?
No no, that's atpbx. He's the one that hates geordies.

Though, in fairness, I think he hates southerners, Man City fans, scousers, the Welsh and the Scottish too. He's the accepting type.

The fact is though that they are unlikely to be needed. Agger had an unfortunate injury last year, these things don't happen every year. When another knock came in it was only for a couple of matches, as such you should be able to make do (we do have two defensive midfielders in front of the back four).

If we have the money then why aren't we chasing the signature of someone big who isn't available (Queresma or Silva spring to mind). That is what Chelsea, Man U, Real & Barca do, we have done it our self on occasion too (Torres, Babel and Keane most recently). Fact is that we have too much dead weight on the wages to come up with suitable packages for any more superstars. I don't think the £2.5m is here or there, but £20K-£35K/ week might be better spent.

some fair points being thrown around here, boro are infact performing a lot better than newcastle, I think theyv made a bigger&better change to their team since start of last season tbh, and are infact a much smaller club.

Was a mag saying that newcastle are a smaller club than everton??
Hows that one work? Id argue newcastle are a fair bit bigger.

Terry's defending is pretty similar to be fair, it isn't pretty, is sometimes questionable but usually gets the job done and shows a level of commitment that few others match. Difference is that he also has an eye for goal and a willingness to get forward and make his size and presence felt in the box. I suppose it is arguable as to whether that counts as actual flair, but it definitely means he is a more rounded player.

Boro are playing good footy, looking forward to going the match this weekend (though you are going to lose :D )

Unlikely but possible and despite what you say, when the 2nd defender got injured we didn't make do with Hobbs and Arbeloa. Like i said £2.5m and whatever wages Hyypia is on will not make much difference to the financial state of the club and it's not like we're desperate for cash anyway.

Silva and Quaresma are the only top wingers who could be realistic targets for us but we went after Quaresma last year and were put off by his attitude so it's unlikely that we'll go for him again and Silva has just signed a new deal and said he wants to stay in Spain.

As for not going after players who aren't available, what about Barry and Keane this summer?

Performing a lot better? How do you work that one out? Both teams have only played one league game!

I didn't say we don't do it, just not to the level of most of our competitors. Queresma didn't look like a player with a bad attitude when he was playing against us last season, arguably the best player on the pitch. Silva probably could have been got if a firm and high offer had come swiftly enough.

I agree that Sami's fee and wages on their own don't do much, but with two others (Pennant and Voronin maybe) you could pay both wages and transfer fees for a top player :)

Do you not think our team would be better with an extra top quality player starting every week and occasionally needing to use a kid for 2-4 matches a season? If Sami wants to stay with us for buttons to play out the end of his career then fair enough. I would be surprised if this is the case though. To other clubs he would be worth good wages so they will have made him and his agent offers.

Lets hope we play a bit better than we did last season against you, I dont fancy a shocking match like against sunderland where Torres has to steal us a win.

**EDIT** ehhh, i thought you were boro, and it would appear you thought i was? Wash your mouth out son!!

They're not.

how are we judging the size btw? I wouldnt really know, but iv lived in the north east all my life and have seen how big a club newcastle are within the local proximity, and assumed everton been where they are would be overshadowed by nearby slightly bigger/more successful teams :)

I meant within recent times - as in end of last season :) sorry

But selling Hyypia won't make the difference in signing another top player or not. The club says that the money is in place to sign Barry (£18m) but they've decided he's not worth it, so we've got the money to sign a top player.

As for Hyypia wanting to stay with us; well he chose to activate the clause in his old deal that allowed him another year if he played enough games so im sure he is happy.

Manucho has a work permit

WE HAVE ANOTHER STRIKER!

Whatever happened to Dong? He's not been given a squad number which must mean he is on his way out. Shame really. He could have been the next Ronaldo.....

:D

Us and Everton are the only Premiership teams to have not signed anyone yet. Depressing stuff. Wasn't there a direct quote from Fergie last weekend saying we'd be signing someone within the next 48hrs? If so, he lied.
